The paper sector takes advantage of the pull of exports

Between January and September 2010, the consumption of paper and cardboard in our country was 4.800.000 tonnes, 6.1 per cent more than in the same period of 2009, according to a report submitted by the Spanish Association of manufacturers of PastaPaper and cardboard (Aspapel). In addition, during the first half production in this sector reached 4.614.400 tonnes, an increase of 9.9% over the first half of the year in 2009.
Thus, the Spanish paper industry, thanks to the competitiveness of their products, is take the pull of exports to moderate the effect of an internal demand for paper and cardboard that fell 14.5% in 2009 and that begins to recover.
Currently, Spain exports 50% of the production of paper and cellulose. Three-quarters of those exports are destination other countries of the European Union: France, Portugal, Italy, Holland, United Kingdom, Germany and Poland, basically.
Cellulose (January-September 2010)
Production of cellulose recorded in the first nine months of 2010 a total of 1.374.400 tons, which has meant a growth of 9.5%, slightly below the European average (10.2%).
2009, a year of falls
In 2009, the fall in domestic consumption of role of 14.5% (6.213.300 tons) affected both imports (- 13%) and domestic production (- 11%), decreased levels of 2005. Only the performance of exports, which in the year as a whole declined 5.2%, moderated the drop in production. In the European average of paper and cardboard production fell 10.4% in 2009.
In Spain, in the fourth quarter of 2009, although domestic consumption continued falling (- 5.2%), moderated its decline, coupled with an increase of 12.1 per cent exports contributed to that of paper and paperboard production increased slightly (+ 1.2%).
On the other hand, the production of cellulose in Spain, with 1.738.500 tonnes, fell 13.5%, also similar to the European average behavior (- 13.9%).
