Association of industries of the meat Spain (AICE) , the past day 23, held its annual General meeting, which took stock of the sector during the year 2010. For its part, Generoso García, President of AICE, went on to analyse the situation and prospects of the sector, initiating the debate and interventions of members of the General meeting. "Many have been meetings, efforts, initiatives and other meetings since AICE developed during 2010, in our effort to fulfill our mission of support to our partners in a very complicated situation," said the President. "In spite of this, food industries, and within them the meat, we have behaved in a manner much more stable than the majority of industrial sectors, at the time that we have found an outlet to the stagnation of our domestic market in export and innovation.""However, there are also many challenges facing us, and therefore the Union of the sector is more important than ever to deal with them". In this sense, Generoso Garcia noted the difficult situation which has gone through the sector one year more, with a significant increase of costs in many of the items and fundamental inputs to the profitability of companies, such as energy and raw material costs, while that for pigmeat prices were at levels which were made that the European Union would have to resort to private storage, already at the beginning of 2011, to correct this fall. The crisis of the dioxin in Germany and its impact on the European market also represented a major source of instability in the meat sector.

Foreign trade is a strategic axis for the sector.In the year 2010, exports of beef have experienced an increase of 12%, whereas in ovine growth rate reached 49%. In pigs, the growth was more moderate, by already high levels of export, exceeding 30% of the total of 3.390.000 tons, produced in 2010, which represents 2% more than in 2009, while the elaborate progressed by 24%, thanks to the matured.Also, the Chairman of IAEC made reference to the fall in domestic consumption concern especially to businesses, with the addition of the policy change of commercial distribution to cheaper products, which has affected doubly to the industry by cutting margins and the decline in sales of higher-quality and value-added products.
Thus, to overcome this situation, during the Board was highlighted the need to continue to insist on training initiatives and innovation. Companies and associations working in r & d initiatives, in order to encourage improvements in the position in the market to adapt to the requirements of the distribution and consumers and to optimize the quality, safety and profitability of the production processes.Currently, there are numerous r & d projects underway, with technological, public and private, University, centres on topics of importance to the sector, such as the reduction of salt in meat products, the Elimination of mites in cured ham, the detection of toxoplasma using molecular techniques in cured ham, development of products with nutritional profiles over light, low in fat, etc.In this connection, Board of AICE greeted the modernisation of the regulation of products launched by the Ministry of environment and Rural Environment and marine (MARM), and that will mean a regulatory framework more modern and simple for the industries. In addition, announced the forthcoming signing of an agreement with the MARM, to provide an information service specialist to exporting companies.
