The UAB will investigate on the impact of the olive oil in the prevention of breast cancer
January 13, 2009
Over the next five years, the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) will investigate the therapeutic properties of the olive oil in breast cancer, through an agreement with the professional organization of the olive Spanish oil. As already noted in March 2008 the multidisciplinary Center for the study of the cancer of breast (GMECM), the moderate consumption of Virgin olive oil slows down the evolution of this type of cancer. Hand in hand with the researchers of the GMECM is intended to find out the possible effects of common food components in this disease, under the premise that some of them could take action against the harmful consequences of fats. This agreement will allow the development of pilot studies with samples and human cell lines, as well as an analysis of the molecular changes found in these tumors and the genes involved in this pathology. Is expected that the Convention with the professional organization of the olive Spanish oil include in addition to the Ministry of agriculture, food and Rural Action of Catalonia, as well as to health, and is added to the support of the Ministry of education and sciencethe environment, the Olivarero communal Heritage Foundation and the Agency for the olive oil. Currently, breast cancer is the most frequent among the female population, especially in developed countries. In this sense, nutriciales factors play a key role.
