The Nafispack project will identify the pathogens that make that the products deteriorate
Itene develops new packaging materials that allow to extend the useful life of fresh produce
Its freshness and, of course, as are two of the main conditions that consumers choose a product. Before the hearing, and taste, then determine the election. Foods are exposed to the action of physical-chemical factors and microbiological external, such as light, oxygen, moisture, and microorganisms that can have a negative effect on the quality and safety of the product and the time will inevitably lead to its loss. The packaging is function to minimize the action of these agents, provide food and its surroundings.
Fresh foods are the most sensitive in this regard, and as a response to the need of the market to extend its useful life arises the project Nafispack (Natural Antimicrobials For Innovative and Safe Packaging), led by
Itene, belonging to the network of technological institutes of the Valencia. Its objective is to develop new packaging materials allowing fresh products to prevent, reduce and detect the growth of pathogens responsible for that deteriorate. In particular, the project focuses as the object of study in three fresh products of special interest across Europe and very sensitive to the passage of time, such as fish, fresh chicken and minimally processed vegetables (4th range).
Maintain the quality
The Nafispack project will investigate how to ensure and maintain the quality of these food products in the supply chain through the development of new packaging systems to increase the duration of the fresh product using two very innovative technologies: the antimicrobial active packaging and smart packagingthe latter based on the monitoring that indicates the quality of the food with new materials.
Combining both is to lengthen the useful life of these products with quality and especially Security.
On the other hand, the new packaging materials and its active substances will be assessed in terms of chemical, microbiological, toxicological risk and predictive model, in order to determine if your listing is possible positive that it is preparing the European Commission for the regulation of the same. This project will provide tools upgraded for the risk assessment of this type of innovative packaging.
