Washing line and separation of polypropylene: recovery of lead from batteries for trucks

The installation of washing and separation used to make polypropylene which comes from recovery of lead acid batteries from trucks.

After crushing old batteries from trucks and processing acid and lead racks, remains a fraction of polypropylene. Recycling this material is particularly difficult because it is contaminated with traces of previous processes materials. Material carries something acid, is mixed with remains of the pallets of wood and foreign bodies of minerals. Some of the pollutants can be dissolved in water, others are not. Partly its specific weight is greater than the PP and in part is lower. Herbold Meckesheim (represented in Spain by commercial Schneider) has developed the following solution in 3 easy steps: 1. wet grinding: large amounts of water is passed through a mill with sieve, grind large parts coming already from a previous shells break process. The intense mechanical effort made during the crushing process cleans the material and avoids the inclusion of dirt particles. The myriad of drain connected then separates dirty water grinding material and clarifies the final product with fresh water.

2. Wet separation: in this process separates particles of greater specific weight of the lighter-weight PP. Remains of foreign bodies, minerals, metals, remains of hard rubber of the shells of the batteries will be ejected by the wet separation system.

3. Dry separation: after drying the material are driven out foreign bodies lower specific weight of the shredded material which can be pieces of wood, fibres, sheets and fine particles of PP. This is done in a system of several steps consisting of separator for air, sifting machine and vibrator separator. The advantage is that it also allows the separation of PVC soft spongy rubber gaskets (with and < 1), a part of the material which does not separate wet separation process. This far was problems in conventional recycling of scrap batteries.The obtained fraction of PP, is free from dirt and foreign bodies. The value of total connection is 145 kW (including thermal drying).
