Ecoembes signs an agreement with the Generalitat de Catalunya to boost research in sustainable development
Melchor Ordóñez, CEO of Ecoembes and Josep Huguet i Biosca, Counsellor for innovation, University and company of the Generalitat of Catalonia and President of the Board of Trustees of the school of international commerce at the University Pompeu Fabra, have signed a cooperation agreement to jointly develop various research activitiestraining and communication in management of packaging and sustainable development issues. The agreement establishes the bases for the creation of an Observatory theme called 'Observatory Ecoembes of cycle of life of the containers'.
The objective of the Observatory will be collect, generate and disseminate scientific information on the sustainability of packaging throughout its life cycle, thus driving business innovation. In addition, the project will help to generate methods and information for the environmental upgrading of the containers, regardless of their material. The agreement has an initial duration of four years and has a budget of EUR 100 000 for the year 2008.
Since the implementation of this system of selective collection, in May 1998, have been recovered more than 8.9 million tonnes of packaging that have not ended in landfill sites (equivalent to more than 650 full of football stadiums containers). More than 1.3 million tons of light packaging, cardboard and paper containers were recovered in 2007.
