The recycling of plastic containers increased 20% compared to 2005
Ecoembes recovered more than 1.2 million tonnes of packaging in 2006, 63% of the jobs in the market through the GIS
The integrated management of packaging (GIS) system managed by Ecoembes recovered 1.267.029 tonnes of packaging in 2006, which represents 63.3 per cent of all packaging put on the market by the companies adhered to the Sig. In addition, more than one million tonnes of packaging were recycled - 1.066.343 (62.059 more than in 2006)-, i.e., more than half (53.2 per cent) of domestic packaging placed on the market through the Sig.
By type of material, the GIS that manages Ecoembes in 2006 recycled 598.677 tons of packaging of papel-cartón, 11.634 more than in 2005. 223.251 Tons of plastic containers, is also whose representing an increase of 20.3 percent from 2005. Also, 236.032 tons of metals were recycled in 2006, 6.8 per cent over 2005.
Recovery and recycling of the GIS results exceed the requirements of national law - law of packaging and packaging waste (Lere) – and move closer to the objectives set by Directive 2004/12/EC. According to this regulation, as of December 2008 is must recycle, at least, 60 per cent of the packaging of papel-cartón, 50 percent of the metal containers, 22.5 percent of plastic packaging and 15 per cent of the wood. The directive puts the overall recycling target by 55 percent. The GIS managed by Ecoembes, met the objectives of the Lere, is 1.8 points for the overall recycling target that marks the European directive.

Ten years 7.5 million tonnes
Ecoembes, created in 1996, started operations in 1997. From then until December of 2006 it has recovered more than 7.5 million tonnes of packaging, containers that have not gone to landfill. With the recovered packaging could fill to overflowing more than 550 as Santiago Bernabeu or Camp Nou football stadiums.
The recovered packaging, is whose 5.7 million tons, which represents millions of tons of raw material saved and avoided energy consumption.
Selective waste collection, available to 42 million in Spanish
Conventions and agreements signed between Ecoembes and different administrations allow selective waste collection is available to 42 million Spaniards. In December 2006, Ecoembes had signed 10 institutional framework with autonomous communities, five framework agreements agreements and 86 agreements with local entities.
These agreements enable that 42.7 million can already participate in the selective collection of packaging paper and paperboard and 41.4 million are able to recover light packaging (plastic containers, cans and briks).
On the other hand, selection, top destination of domestic packaging plants, increased in 2006. At the end of 2006, were 89 selection of light packaging operating plants in the national territory, six more than in 2005. Of these, 19 plants-Albacete, Alcalá de Guadaira, Amorebieta, Benidorm, constant, Córdoba, Gavá, Jundiz, La Rioja, Llagostera, Montalbán, Mallorca, Murcia, Pinto, Santa Maria de Palautordera, serine, Soria, Urnieta and Vic - incorporate equipment for the separation and automatic selection of the packaging.
208 new businesses stuck in 2006
At the end of 2006 Ecoembes had 12.208 companies adhering to the GIS, 208 more than in 2005. The packaging also managed turnover, reaching 2.002.592 tons, 51.814 more than in 2005.
Among affiliated enterprises, a sector with greater representation in 2006 was that of food (6.269 companies), 51,35 per cent of the total. Beverage companies dominated the 7.74% (945), the manufacturers of products for hygiene and beauty the 7,22% (881) and products of cleaning and maintenance 4.67 percent (570). Finally, other sectors are 29.02 percent.

With regard to geographical distribution, the autonomous community with the largest number of affiliated companies is Catalonia (21,34% of the total), followed by Valencia (14.73 per cent), the community of Madrid (11.93 per cent) and Andalusia (11,16 per cent) in 2006joined Ecoembes four companies not Spanish, belonging to the EU, which are now 128 foreign companies linked to Ecoembes, 1.05 percent of the total.
In the last meeting of shareholders, held on 28 June, agreed to revise the rates of the Green point, after two years without doing so. The new rates represent an average of 9.8 per cent increase and will enter into force in 2008. The tariffs, which are also valid during 2009, have been calculated on the basis of the accumulated CPI over the years without ascent over the increase in population incorporated into selective waste collection.
Ecoembes and the Green point
Ecoembes is the non-profit responsible for managing the integrated (GIS) management system aimed at selective collection, recovery and recycling of packaging and packaging waste. Founded in November 1996, their stake is made up of undertakings and associations of companies that make up all the sectors involved in the packaging value chain: Packers (55 percent), trade and distribution (20%), representatives of matter prima (20 percent) and recyclers and other (5%). All the bottles attached to the GIS are identified with the Green point symbol which ensures compliance with the law by companies who use it.
