Interview with Julio de la Peña, director of N.C. Service, S.A.
July 17, 2009
What is the main activity of N.C. Service?
Our activity is based on three work differentiated in the business of chip startup through the milling operations: provide technical service to users around the world of milling machines, most of the Correa trademark; reconstruction, modernisation, optimization and adaptation to the EC regulations of machines owned by our clients and that we send to our facilities; and sale of equipment used to rebuild and sell, and may prolong the useful life of such equipment.
By what means have to develop their activity?
We currently have large elements of lifting up to 25 tons, Correa CNC milling machines for machining, torno Amutio and grinders Ger. As for the machining of large pieces, usually tend it to outsource to group companies that are specialised in the development of different parts and machine components and are perfectly knowledgeable of our 'know how' and, on other occasions, to our own clients who are users of our machines and as a result of our technology.
He has recently made some investment or intends to do it?
In the past four years we have built, and we we have transferred, to our new facilities, on a plot of 4,000 meters and a floor area of 2,000 meters of workshops and offices 400, all equipped with the best means to exercise our activity.
How many machines convert a year?
Last year we have rebuilt a 20 machines.
It has sufficient capacity to deal with all work requested or should contract out sometimes?
In this business for the reconstruction and the 'retrofiting' always there is a high degree of outsourcing and collaboration with suppliers that often are group companies which have this kind of technologies developed and our customers incorporate in their machines.
The conversion, what is the most common work?
What more demanding customers, because it deteriorates quickly or becomes obsolete, is the electronic part of the milling machine CNC.
In almost all of the 'retrofiting' of machines, in addition to the mechanical, optimization where it is essential that all the mechanical elements subject to wear during their life cycle are in conformity or substitute, it is essential the manufacture of the new cabinet are placed where all the new elements such as regulators and numerical control of new generation. All these operations and elements are clearly agreed in advance with our clients, who are those who decide what new elements want to introduce.
What are the most common problems?
The biggest problem is the lack of pressure in the machining and this leads to a geometric verification of the machine, starting by making a good placement of the machine, until the completion of all corrections by means of Laser Interferometer.
In the current economic situation, it seems, a priori that the conversion of machinery, it may be a booming sector. Is it so?
It seems so, and so has been in any other crisis which I live over the years in this business, but currently several clients that are waiting for funding to undertake their investments we have in portfolio.
What is the most common situation? Upgrade machines for the owners of them and return them in good condition;? can purchase machines in poor condition for their conversion and sale or obsolete?
Customers demand reconstruction of machines, operations that typically have an estimated duration of three months, time that customer we give you a machine of similar characteristics so that they can continue working in your production process, or simply contemplates the purchase of an already rebuilt equipment and let the elder in return.
The adaptation of a machine to the regulations in force, for example security, is frequent?
As regards the adaptation of machines to the EC regulations, not everything what provides this standard relates to security. Involve other criteria that it must be made clear to customers, and is not always possible and feasible economically for customers undertake this type of investment. Sometimes a total reconstruction of machine is better and better.
Reconstruction of machinery
Mechanical or electronic reconstruction is a greater intervention which aims to restore and even improve the original performance of the team. Mechanical reconstruction can include from the readjustment of guides, the repair of the head to the Elimination of gaps, while electronic reconstruction may involve from a simple software update until the realignment of dynamic parameters in the regulators ('drivers'). The up-grading or functional expansion of the team involves the incorporation of new features and functionality. It may include among other things, the replacement or improvement of numerical control, the incorporation of accessories, the increase in working capacity, improving the capacity of communication of the machine (interconnection network / Ethernet) or the adaptation of machines to the EC (fairing and securities) regulations.
