Spain keeps his capacity of public and private R&D

The internal expense in Investigation and Development (R&D) rose to 14.588 million euros in 2010, what supposed an increase of 0,1% with regard to the year 2009. Said expense represented 1,39% of the Gross Inner Product (GDP).
By sectors of execution, the sector companies presented the greater percentage on the total expense in R&D, with 51,5% (what meant 0,71% of the GDP). It was still in him importance the sector upper Education, with 28,3% of the total expense (0,39% of the GDP).
By his part, the expense in R&D of the Public Administration was 20,1% of the total expense (0,28% of the GDP). 0,2% remaining corresponded to the sector of the Private Institutions without Ends of Lucre (IPSFL).
Comparing the expense in activities of R&D of 2010 with the one of the previous year, fits to stand out that the business sector experienced a descent of 0,8%. It is necessary to take into account that in this sector the number of units that realised activities of R&D reduced 15,6% with regard to 2009.
By his part, the sector Public Administration registered a tax of annual growth of 0,1% in the internal expense in R&D.
Of the results that collect in the Statistics of the INE on Activities in R&D (2010), Cotec resalta some data that seem him notable:
- In the year 2010 keeps the total expense in R&D in Spain, that rises to 14.588 million euros.
- In 2010, descended the business expense 0,8% because of a decrease of 9,8% in the expenses of capital, whereas the common expenses increased 0,5%.
- The average and big companies increased his expense in R&D. The companies of more than 250 employees increased his expense in R&D in 1,1%, and the companies of 50 to 249 employees in 4,1%.
- The number of companies that realised activities of R&D in the year 2010 reduced 16%. This fall was more accused in the stretch of companies of 10 to 49 employees that was of 28%.
- The number of researchers employed in the companies has diminished 1,7% with regard to 2009, and in the public sector has increased 1,2%.

Finance of the activities of R&D
In the year 2010 the activities of R&D funded mainly by the Public Administration (46,6%) and the private sector (42,9%). The pertinent bottoms of the foreigner (5,7%), of the upper Education (3,9%) and of the IPSFL (0,7%) completed the finance of the total expense of R&D.
Expense in R&D by autonomous communities
The autonomous communities that realised in 2010 a greater effort in activities of R&D were Community of Madrid (2,02% of his GDP), Community Foral of Navarra (1,97%),
Basque Country (1,95%) and Catalonia (1,63%). These four communities were the only that presented figures of intensity in the expense of upper R&D to the national average.
The communities that presented the greater taxes of growth with regard to 2009 were Illes Balears (10,5%) Andalucia (9,4%) and Castile-La Mancha (7,3%).

Personnel employed in R&D
A total of 222.022 people devoted to activities of R&D, in equivalence to complete day in the year 2010, what represented the 12,0 by one thousand of the busy total population. The community of researchers reached the figure of 134.653 people in equivalence to complete day in the year, what supposed a 7,3 by one thousand of the busy total population. 40,0% of the personnel in R&D in equivalence to complete day were women. The most elevated percentages of feminine participation gave in the IPSFL (53,5%) and in the Public Administration (51,4%). In the companies this percentage situated in 30,7%.
Expense in R&D by branches of activity
The industry concentrated 47,1% of the expense in R&D in the year 2010. By his part, to the companies of the service sector corresponded them 49,7% of the same.By branches of activity stood out the ones of Services of R&D, with 20,9% of the total of the expense, and the one of Pharmacy, with 8,4%.
The statistics of R&D has elaborated following the methodological recommendations of the Proposal of Practical Norm for Surveys of Investigation and Experimental Development of the OCDE (Manual of Frascati). In particular, the new version recommends on purpose that all the companies that execute R&D, already was of continuous form or of occasional form, include in the surveys of R&D.
Main indicators
- The expense in R&D rose to 14.588 million euros in the year 2010, with an increase of 0,1% with regard to 2009. This expense supposed 1,39% of the GDP*, that would be the same that the one of the year 2009 to the recalcular both GDP in the new base 2008.

- Illes Balears, Andalucia and Castile-La Mancha were the autonomous communities that presented greater taxes of growth in expense in R&D with regard to 2009.
