Falling employment in the sector of metal except in construction machinery

Employment in the sector of the metal has fallen for the first time since 1995. The negative annual change rate was 1.3 percent during the first quarter of this year. These data belong to labour statistics drawn up by the Spanish Confederation of business organizations of Metal (Confemetal) based on the survey of population (LFS).
In absolute figures, the first quarter of this year there were 1.109.700 occupied in the sector, figure less than the 1.124.700 occupied for the first quarter of the year 2001. The number of occupied grew until the third quarter of 2001, to the occupied 1.148.200, and from that date began to descend to finish the year with occupied 1.143.300.
Good behavior in machine building
The trend has not been the same in all the branches of activity, while the occupation in machinery of Office and computer equipment has dropped in a catastrophic manner (- 47%), construction of machinery and mechanical equipment grew by 8.4 percent the first quarter of this year (annual rate). Currently, this sector employs 221.600 people.
