"It sets apart us, a very small region being Murcia, is able to export 20% of the national total"
Interview with Fernando Gómez, director of Proexport
What are the objectives of Proexport?
Proexport is the Association of producers and exporters in the region of Murcia. Made up of some 120 companies that are grouped in turn 55 business groups producers and exporters, export consortia and ten alhóndigas of the region of Murcia, all net exporter status. Behind it there are about 3,500 farmers and about 75% of our production goes abroad, a total of some 40 countries, reaching a turnover of EUR 1 billion.
In this latest campaign we have marketed the order of the 900,000 tons of fruit and vegetables, especially in the horticultural segment, where we are strongest.
Why is the large diversification of fruit and vegetables in the region of Murcia?
An element that sets us apart is that being a very small region, we are able to export 20 per cent of the national total. It is a fact that says a lot of, first, the specialization of the fruit and vegetables in the region and second, sector commercial penetration in international markets. And get it is very difficult because do so a year is fine but keep means that there is a very close relationship with the chains of supermarkets, discount and importers from all over Europe.
Follow them a long tradición…
And training. There is a very broad knowledge of what is agriculture in the region. We have very specialized people, trained and experienced farmers, a long tradition and a sense of service to the highly developed consumer. That makes that thanks to our climate, we have a wide range of products and that any supermarket can fill shelves of fruit and vegetables of the region of Murcia and throughout the year.
What are the main challenges facing the sector in the region?
The main challenges that we set for the coming years are: consolidate in traditional economies, such as the Central European, and expand in Europe from the East and Russia, where we have been working for four years of intense form. Also in the middle where we have already taken the first steps.
What is the bet of Proexport by Fruit Attraction?
Our bet for Fruit Attraction is total. We are members of the Organizing Committee. It is our fair. We help to organize it, are within Fepex, in the Organizing Committee of Ifema, then at the level of companies, we are the Association that brings more associated companies with its own stand, a total of 27. The most under the umbrella of the Pavilion of Murcia, but also others individually, occupying more than 700 square meters of exhibition. We've highlighted the majority of our cadres, especially the departments business and management of the companies because we have convened here to all our international clients.
This is a fair to make business. Here closed for the fall, spring, summer and winter supply problems. It works well and I think is something that also are seeing our customers.
You can say that we are going to double the number of international visitors to the fair and are confident that this will lead to profitability, business, wealth and employment for our region and for Spain. Needed a fair like this in Spain.
