Founded in 1917 as Crane Packing Company, the company established several locations in the United States, Canada and England. Prior to the 2nd World War, Crane Packing sold its English base of operations the company Tube Investments, which later became known as TI Group PLC.

In 1951, Crane Parking moved from its facilities in Chicago, IL, to its current location in Morton Grove, IL. The complex is located on 26 acres of land, which includes 5 buildings. In 1987, the company was bought by TI Group PLC. After a series of acquisitions the company United States and England were United under the name of John Crane from the unification in 1987, John Crane has established itself as a Global Organization, with the aim to give superior service to customers and to be the technological leader in the sealing industry. In 1998, John Crane acquired three additional companies of sealed, Sealol, Safematic and Flexibox. These companies expanded product line as well as the presence of John Crane in the world, adding high-quality welded bellows shutters, focusing on sealing and lubrication products to serve the market for pulp and paper, high temperature and high pressure to refinery closures.
Crane Packing Company initially manufactured packing and gaskets, which are still available today by John Crane. John Crane mechanical packing is sold under the name of Rite-Pack and is available in the form of pre-cut rings or by weight. Mechanical packing division also produces flat gaskets for valve applications. Today John Crane manufactures 238,856 braid packing thousands each year, enough to reach the Moon and return.

The company invented the first closure for motor vehicles in 1939. We currently produce millions of closures for American auto companies. At the beginning of 1940s, John Crane developed and introduced closures called John Crane type 1. An elastomer bellows close, this close revolution technology of stamping and is still one of the locks used in the industry. Then appeared other patents for mechanical seals for rotating, creating equipment a philosophy of service to customer: proper closure to the correct application. In 1980, John Crane introduced the 28 type of non-contact, lubricated gas shut off. This closure designed for spun compressors. Its creation revolutionized pipeline compression stations from the mountains in the West of Canada to the deserts of the Middle East.

In 1990, John Crane applied its technology of non - contact to pumps handling liquids hazardous for the environment. By applying this technology together with standard ANSI or API, the user can easily conform to demanding about hazardous emissions EPA regulation. It is technology was successfully applied to applications where the closure is operating near the boiling point of the sealing fluid. Materials such as liquid nitrogen, Argon and oxygen stored in tankers, are being sealed with closures of no contact. These closures, operating at temperatures of criogenizacion, have a greater impact on reducing the cost of the equipment. Other applications, such as vaporized hydrocarbon, are being sealed with this technology. Our new design of low speed endure the conditions found in mixers and agitators. This area of application is significant in that the liquid lubrication is eliminated and the greater purity of the product is maintained in the container. The Sealol acquisition strengthened the line of welded bellows seals. These closures serve operations of high/low temperature, allowing John Crane to offer the most extensive range of mechanical seals in the industry.

John Crane is a subsidiary of Smiths Group PLC, the new company formed after the merger of Smiths Industries and TI Group.
With a global sales service organized in sectors, market and service centers strategically placed John Crane remains committed to service and looking for the perfect solutions for all requirements of the systems of sealing.
