Eroski reduces the environmental impact of packaging with the support of an application
July 20, 2011
The supermarket chain has developed the computer tool in collaboration with the Technological centre Azti-Tecnalia. An example is the substitution of label EP by the new linerless of FSC paper with which Eroski earned a total saving of 43 tons of CO2 in 2010.
Through this tool can compare the effect of different formats from packaging, both in the costs (materials, production process, transport, final management) and the global environmental impact and emission of greenhouse gases, throughout the cycle of life of the container or packaging solutions analysed.
In this way, sustainability criteria to select the most appropriate container for a product format, combining different materials, processes, systems of transport and types of management can be introduced. The priority objective is reduction or minimization of the environmental impact of packaging and packaging used in store.
