De 3.606 t/CO2 en 2015 a neutra en carbono en 2020 Como planta de producción, la planta de Schaeffler en Elgoibar consume una gran cantidad de energía en el proceso productivo. Cuando se inició el proyecto en 2015 el volumen de emisiones de CO2 era de 3.606 t/año (alcances 1 y 2). En agosto de 2016, la planta empezó a utilizar electricidad proveniente únicamente de fuentes renovables, consiguiendo así una reducción importante de las emisiones. En la fase actual de compensaciones, el objetivo es compensar las emisiones que no es posible evitar debido al proceso productivo mediante la compra de reducciones de emisiones certificadas. En el suministro de gas natural, Schaeffler Iberia ha llegado a un acuerdo con el comercializador para que compense el 100% de las emisiones derivadas de su consumo de gas. Adicionalmente, hasta finales de 2020 se plantarán 2.000 árboles autóctonos en diferentes zonas de la comarca. Esta medida contribuirá a conservar la biodiversidad de la región en la que se encuentra la planta y ayudará a compensar parte de las emisiones derivadas del transporte de mercancías, gestión de residuos y del transporte de los empleados. Reducción del uso de agua durante la producción La reducción de las emisiones de CO2 ha sido el principal hito, pero también se llevan a cabo otras acciones para conseguir una producción sostenible, especialmente en la reducción del consumo de agua en su proceso productivo. In August 2016, the plant started using electricity originating solely from renewable sources, thereby achieving a significant reduction in emissions. During the current offset phase, the aim is to offset those emissions that cannot be avoided due to the productive process, by purchasing Certified Emission Reductions. For the supply of natural gas, Schaeffler Iberia has entered into an agreement with a reseller to offset 100% of the emissions arising from its gas consumption. In addition, by the end of this year, 2,000 indigenous trees will be planted in different parts of the region. This measure will help conserve the biodiversity of the region in which the plant is located and help to offset part of the emissions arising from the transport of goods, waste management and the transport of employees. Reducing water use during production The reduction in CO2 emissions has been the main objective, but other actions have also been implemented to achieve a sustainable production, particularly in reducing and consuming water during the productive process. By adapting the productive process and the water treatment installations, the company has sought to, on one hand, reduce the volume and on the other, increase recycling. Following the actions undertaken in 2016, the company has managed to reduce its total water consumption by 75%, and the neutral corporate vision as regards this consumption, with new water treatment and production technologies, will achieve 100% recycled water in the short-term.
