When the Infante de Sagres first opened its doors in 1951, the vision of its creator, the entrepreneur and philanthropist, Delfim Ferreira, was to give the city of Porto a luxury hotel to match Europe’s best. The name of the hotel pays tribute to Prince Henry the Navigator, due to his support of the Age of Discovery and the first journeys of exploration undertaken by the Portuguese. The prince was also known as the Infante de Sagres, the name of the place where he founded his school of navigation.
