A greater energy saving means an increased economic saving, which is key so that this technology offers cost-effective solutions, as in this specific example. As a backup system, the residence has a boiler with a performance of 90% (measured at the flue gas output) that provides the heat required to cover the building’s thermal demand. The daily thermal demand is divided into 22,000 litres for showers and 5,000 litres for other uses. The price paid for fuel is 0.029 €/kWh and the variable electricity quota is 0.11 €/kWh. The residence is open all year round. It has a flat roof with enough space to install 64 aH60 model hybrid panels, representing a collection area of 100.48 m2. These panels offer a PV output of 16 kWp (64 kW nominal) and 170 kW thermal. The annual thermal production of this installation is 84,364 kWh/year with a PV generation of 22,885 kWh/year. The energy production results in an annual saving of €11,015 and an emissions reduction of 57,636 kgCO2 per year. The installation (fully installed and operational) has involved an investment cost of €57,652. As a result, the investment is amortised in 5.4 years. At the end of the installation’s service life (estimated at 25 years) the accumulated cash stands at €1,106,681. These results show that the use of hybrid solar panels in the geriatric residence sector can be very interesting, provided three basic requirements are met – and which usually exist in Spain: a high level of irradiation, high levels of energy consumption and high energy prices. In this case, not only is the investment recovered in a short period of time, but also the costs arising from the energy consumption of the residence are lower. As a result, the business becomes more competitive and emissions are reduced. One of the most important aspects of this project is that it offers a monitoring system, Abora Monitor, which provides real time information on output and the saving achieved. This information is very important for three reasons: the owner knows the economic saving achieved; the client sees the CO2 emissions avoided, which transmits an image of sustainability for the residence; and lastly, the maintenance team is able to monitor the operational status of the installation and take action in the event any value falls outside its recommended range. In addition to the advantages already mentioned, the installation of hybrid solar panels offers other advantages, including the following: • Solving the problem of the lack of rooftop space, as more energy is generated in the same space than if PV modules and thermal collectors had been installed separately. • Compliance with regulatory standards in those new buildings where the installation of thermal collectors (HE4) and PV panels (HE5) is required.
