Los visitantes de la comunidad bávara de Oettingen (con una población de 5.000 habitantes) difícilmente pueden pasar por alto las instalaciones de Oettinger. La ciudad acoge la sede de la empresa y es difícil obviar este hecho. Al acercarse a la ciudad desde el oeste, lo primero que ve es una rotonda con un hervidor de cerveza de cobre. Desde el sur, tendrán una imagen clara de la nueva fábrica de cerveza con sus gigantescas cubas de fermentación y desde el este, se puede contemplar la antigua fábrica de cerveza de la compañía. Incluso bajo tierra, es difícil perder de vista a Oettinger, porque la compañía tiene una tubería subterránea de cerveza que comunica la planta cervecera, en el norte, hasta la planta embotelladora, en el sur. La cervecera parece capaz de reconciliar sin esfuerzo aparentes contradicciones, pues es tanto una empresa familiar, como una empresa a gran escala. Combina lo ultramoderno, la producción automatizada, con la tradición. Da un gran valor a la conciencia ambiental, así como a las políticas de precios atractivos. En las nuevas fábricas de última generación, la única pista de que se está fabricando cerveza es el aroma del mosto que hierve a fuego lento. Prácticamente nada del proceso es visible. The town is home to the company’s headquarters and it is hard to overlook the fact. Approaching the town from the west, the first thing they see is a roundabout featuring a copper brewing kettle. Coming from the south, they have a clear view of the new brewery facility with its giant fermenting vats and from the east, the old brewery. Even underground, it is difficult to lose sight of Oettinger because the company runs a subterranean beer pipeline from the brewing plant in the north to the bottling plant in the south. The brewery seems able to effortlessly reconcile apparent contradictions as it is both a family-run business and large-scale company. It combines ultramodern, automated production with tradition, placing great value on environmental awareness while pursuing attractive pricing policies. At the new, state-of-the-art brewing plants, the only indication that beer is being produced is the aroma of the simmering wort. Virtually nothing else can be seen of the process. There are four huge stainless steel vats in the southern brewing plant that was constructed in 2002. The content of these vats, whether malt mash or the hops boiling in the wort, are only visible through a small inspection door. Shiny, stainless steel vats and pipelines are everywhere. This is where the industrial production facility shows its most modern side. Operating staff are few and far between: two brewing assistants and a master brewer are on duty in the brewery round the clock. This operating crew oversees everything including the plant’s technology systems, such as the combined heat and power (CHP) module fromMTU Onsite Energy and the absorption chilling plant. A brew is born Trucks deliver malt to the breweries where it is stored in silos until needed for processing. Hidden from view, the malt is ground in the malt mill before being fed through pipelines to the mash tun and mixed with water to create the actual mash.
