Este mes, José Manuel Entrecanales, Presidente de Acciona, hacía referencia a la campaña de la compañía ‘Business as Unusual’ como una llamada a la sociedad empresarial para poner el foco en estos sectores que van a influir en los grandes retos del mundo. Como se menciona en la campaña de manera recurrente:‘¿y si la decisión más inteligente fuera invertir en el planeta?’ El sector de la energía necesita definitivamente y sencillamente este compromiso. La innovación es pieza clave en la consecución de la rentabilidad de las energías limpias, renovables. Uno de los resultados más directos y significativos de la inversión en innovación en energía es la reducción del coste de la energía o LCOE (Levelized Cost Of Energy). Por ejemplo, en eólica terrestre, la inversión global en innovación desde 2009 ha sido de 17.000M$ y la reducción del coste de la energía, en ese mismo periodo, ha sido de un 67%, lo que supone una bajada espectacular en un plazo de solo ocho años. En solar fotovoltaica, la inversión global en innovación desde 2008 ha alcanzado los 37.900M$, con reducciones de costes superiores al 85%. Y lo más apasionante: generan impacto positivo en nuestra sociedad y contribuyen a un futuro energético más sostenible. Las energías renovables son competitivas e internacionalizadas, ganan concursos y subastas de electricidad en todo el mundo y generan una balanza comercial positiva, por ejemplo en España de 2.793 M€ en 2016. Crean riqueza, con una contribución total al PIB en España de más de 8.500 M€ este año. Reducen importaciones de combustibles fósiles y por tanto la dependencia energética. También en nuestro país, evitan la emisión a la atmósfera de más de 52 millones de toneladas de CO2 cada año. Y generan empleo, un total de 74.566 puestos de trabajo en 2016. Un empleo de calidad, asociado al conocimiento, especialización, desarrollo e innovación. La economía se está electrificando, la energía se está descarbonizando, descentralizando, y digitalizando. As the campaign repeatedly says:‘and what if the smartest decision was to invest in the planet?’ The energy sector definitively and simply needs this commitment. Innovation is the lynch pin to achieve cost effective, clean renewable energy. One of the most direct and important results of the investment in energy innovation is the reduction in the levelised cost of energy (LCOE). For example, global innovation investment in onshore wind power since 2009 has amounted to US$17bn and the reduction in the cost of energy over the same period was 67%, representing a spectacular drop in a period of just eight years. In solar PV, global investment in innovation since 2008 reached US37.9bn, with costs reductions in excess of 85%. And most exciting of all: they generate a positive impact on our society and contribute to a more sustainable energy future. Renewables are competitive and internationalised; they win tenders and power auctions around the world and generate a positive balance of trade, for example in Spain, in 2016, it stood at €2.793m. They create wealth, with a total contribution to Spanish GDP of more than €8.5bn this year. They reduce imports of fossil fuels and thus energy dependence. In Spain they have avoided the emission into the atmosphere of over 52 million tonnes of CO2 each year. And they create employment, a total of 74,566 jobs in 2016. Quality employment, associated with knowledge, specialisation, development and innovation. The economy is being electrified, energy is being decarbonised, decentralised and digitised. Innovation makes us ready to address these major challenges more efficiently and sustainably. Among the team of innovation professionals under my management at Acciona Energía, approximately 50% are women. It is a high performance, highly technologically qualified team. Admittedly this is not representative of what is still seen in the sector in general. However, it does reflect what can currently be observed in the top European, US and most probably Asian universities, unlike what we have witnessed in the technical careers of past generations: talent regardless of gender. Universities are just the starting point of what will gradually, but inevitably, end up permeating the corporate world. And the energy sector will be no exception; it is just a matter of time. WOMEN FOR A BETTER PLANET As professionals working in the energy sector, we are facing a challenge and an obligation to create a better planet. We have to be experts in designing a more sustainable and greener energy future. In short, our talent and effort must help find solutions to the major challenges of the world, and innovation is a key element in the process to decarbonise our economies.
