El 15 de diciembre de 2014, se otorgó al consorcio el estatus de licitador preferido, tras la tercera ronda del programa REIPPPP de Sudáfrica. El proyecto recibió la Autorización Ambiental el 3 de noviembre de 2011. El Informe de Impacto Ambiental y Social (ESIR, por sus siglas en inglés) evaluó los entornos biofísico y socioeconómico e identificó las medidas de gestión y mitigación apropiadas. La evaluación de impacto biofísico reveló que no existen fallas ambientales fatales, ni impactos negativos significativos asociados con el proyecto propuesto en caso de que se implementen medidas de mitigación y gestión. Además, los impactos socio-económicos generales asociados con el proyecto son positivos e incluyen la creación de oportunidades de trabajo y contribuciones a las economías locales, regionales y nacionales. El proyecto Kathu logró el cierre financiero el 15 de mayo de 2016, lo que dio lugar al inicio de la construcción el 26 de mayo. La joint venture formada por Sener y Acciona Industrial fue designada por el consorcio dirigido por Engie para proporcionar servicios de ingeniería, adquisición y construcción para el proyecto. The consortium was awarded the status of preferred bidder on 15 December 2014, following round three of South Africa’s REIPPPP programme. The project received its Environmental Authorisation on 3 November 2011. The Environmental and Social Impact Report (ESIR) assessed both biophysical and socio-economic environments and identified appropriate management andmitigationmeasures. The biophysical impact assessment revealed that there are no fatal environmental flaws and no significant negative impacts associated with the proposed project shouldmitigation and management measures be implemented. In addition, the overall socio-economic impacts associated with the project are positive and include the creation of job opportunities and contributions to the local, regional and national economies. The Kathu project achieved financial close on 15 May 2016 prompting the start of construction on 26 May. The joint venture between Sener and Acciona Industrial was appointed by the Engie-led consortium to provide engineering, procurement and construction services for the project. KATHU SOLAR PARK CSP PLANT SUCCESSFULLY ACHIEVES CONNECTION TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL GRID On 23 February 2018, Sener and Acciona Industrial achieved the connection of the 100 MW Kathu Solar Park CSP plant to the 132 kV Eskom distribution line. Main and auxiliary transformers were energised, representing a key milestone for power plant commissioning activities.
