Durante Against this domestic outlook, recent years have seen many Spanish companies undertaking processes to diversify their activities, shifting from the supply of engineering services for the construction of renewables installations, to the incorporation of O&M services into their extensive product portfolios. This, combined with internationalisation strategies, has turned them into leaders in many regions of the world. Such companies include Revergy whose experience in these processes is the subject of this article. Revergy started to diversify its activities six years ago, including different O&M services into its portfolio to address its goal of internationalising the company. During this period, and given its level of specialisation in every task undertaken at a wind farm (from design to the subsequent O&M), the company has been able to identify the huge risks that affect each phase, as well as the significant impact that each phase has on the next. Today, Revergy has offices in Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, the UK and the US, with local personnel fully dedicated to the execution of wind power and PV projects. It is currently undertaking projects in Turkey, Belgium, Peru, Uruguay, Costa Rica and South Africa. According to the company’s experience, the arduous task of internationalising an ISP requires considering several factors. The following are of vital importance: • Detailed knowledge of the local regulations corresponding to the installation location (not only country regulations). • Goods importation processes. • Safety standards in each country/state. • Local suppliers for both spares and tools. • Personnel training. • Idiosyncrasy of the country. • Time difference between the headquarters and the plant. • Adaptation of working methods and processes at both the head offices and local delegations. Spare parts management, the key component for optimising OPEX in the wind sector Given the current cuts to feed-in tariffs, as well as the prices of recent auctions, the optimisation of a project’s operational expenditure or OPEX, is vitally important. One fundamental aspect of OPEX optimisation concerns spares management. DIVERSIFICATION AND INTERNATIONALISATION: KEYS TO THE SUCCESS OF ISPS IN THE RENEWABLE SECTOR Thanks to the large amount of installed renewable MWs and its leadership in the development of renewable technologies, Spain benefits from numerous companies and professionals with a high level of technical training. The energy reform, approved by the Spanish government and implemented in 2013 and 2014, represented an operational change for every renewable energy installation. In many cases it has meant that the installation’s most important source of revenue, while not the only one, was the sale of electricity on the wholesale market; and the only way to improve its margins, the optimisation of operation and maintenance (O&M). This has led to the development of a comprehensive expertise in Spain alongwith an extensive network of infrastructures required for the correct O&M of renewable energy generation plants, thus turning the country’s Independent Service Providers or ISPs into global leaders.
