El Banco Mundial, con el apoyo del Clean Technology Fund (Fondo para las Tecnologías Limpias, CTF en adelante), lanzó a finales de 2016 un Programa de Conocimiento e Innovación. Este programa trienal está diseñado principalmente como un recurso para abordar lagunas de conocimiento y concienciación, para conectar los proyectos con las fuentes de financiación y el asesoramiento técnico y promover la innovación, para permitir que las inversiones en termosolar avancen más rápido en la región MENA y en más países. El conocimiento generado en la regiónMENA también podría facilitar las inversiones en termosolar en otras partes del mundo, creando un círculo virtuoso de inversiones en termosolar y de reducción de costes a través de economías de escala y aprendizaje globales. Las tecnologías termosolares son cada vez más baratas gracias a las mejoras tecnológicas, las economías de escala y los crecientes mercados. Almacenar el calor es también mucho más barato que almacenar la electricidad, así que la termosolar pronto será capaz de proporcionar energía gestionable y otros servicios al sistema energético de forma más competitiva. Esto tendría importantes implicaciones para la elección de la tecnología de generación de energía y la gestión de sistemas energéticos en países con buenos recursos solares. Y tendría importantes implicaciones para el mundo, y el objetivo global de combatir el cambio climático. Es por eso que la termosolar recibe apoyo financiero en condiciones favorables. Para desbloquear este potencial, una serie de iniciativas se han centrado en acelerar el despliegue de la termosolar en la región MENA. El principio subyacente es, que como se ha visto con la fotovoltaica y la eólica en los últimos años, cuantos más MW termosolares se instalan en el mundo, más barato es cada MW. El Plan de Inversión MENA CSP El Plan de Inversión MENA CSP (MENA CSP IP, en adelante) es una iniciativa que se centró en la movilización de financiación en condiciones favorables y subvenTheWorld Bank, with support from the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) launched a Knowledge and Innovation Programme in late 2016. Storing heat is also much cheaper than storing electricity, so CSP may soon be able to provide more competitive dispatchable energy and other power system services. This would have major implications for the choice of power generation technology and the management of power systems in countries with good solar resources. In addition, it would have major implications for the world and the global target of combating climate change. This is why CSP receives concessional financial support. To unlock this potential, a number of initiatives have focused on accelerating the deployment of CSP in the MENA region. The underlying principle is that — as we have seen with PV and wind power in recent years — the more megawatts of CSP there are installed in the world, the cheaper each megawatt will become. The MENA CSP Investment Plan The MENA CSP Investment Plan (MENA CSP IP) is an initiative that focused on mobilising concessional financing and grants to help CSP scale up in MENA. It benefits from CTF funding, managed by theWorld Bank. THE WORLD BANK AND CTF LAUNCH A NEW PROGRAMME TO EXPLORE CSP POTENTIAL IN THE MENA REGION CSP technologies offer great potential to meet global and national goals for clean, secure and affordable energy. The MENA region has some of the world’s best solar energy resources, with a great potential for CSP power, because the technology uses both light and heat from the sun. Heat from MENA’s abundant sunshine has much greater comparative advantage than just the light. The technology to store heat improves with every project and the costs come down, meaning that soon CSP may be able to provide inexpensive solar energy 24/7 throughout the year. This means that each dollar invested in CSP will generate more energy than in other regions. Global costs of CSP will drop faster if CSP is deployed at scale in MENA.
