Una universidad líder en la gestión de residuos y energía El año 2010 supuso un punto de inflexión en cuanto al consumo energético y se inició un Plan para reducirlo, ya que se había llegado a un gasto excesivo en el funcionamiento diario de sus instalaciones: iluminación de aulas, funcionamiento del laboratorio, climatización de espacios, etc. Cinco años después, la UAB ha superado los objetivos marcados por la administración en este ámbito. El Plan de Acción para la Sostenibilidad Ambiental fijado por la UAB, de acuerdo con las exigencias de la Generalitat de Cataluña para los edificios públicos, estipuló un ahorro anual del 3% acumulativo. La UAB ocupa el 20º lugar del GreenMetric Ranking of World, sobre criterios ambientales que elabora anualmente la Universidad de Indonesia. Es la primera de España. Este ranking analiza los esfuerzos de hasta 407 universidades de todo el mundo con respecto a la sostenibilidad y las políticas de gestión respetuosas con el medio ambiente. Se valoran, entre otros, aspectos como las infraestructuras, el uso del agua y los transportes.
