Durante 2021, SIGNUS gestionó 200.286 toneladas de neumáticos fuera de uso que convirtió en nuevos productos útiles para diferentes aplicaciones. Del total recogido el 11,4% se destinó a la preparación para su reutilización (neumático de segundo uso o recauchutado), el 36,4% se destinó a valorización energética y el 52,3% restante, se recicló, en las diferentes plantas de transformación existentes en España, en productos que se destinaron a diferentes aplicaciones. Entre los principales usos a los que se destinó el material obtenido del neumático al final de su vida útil en 2021, destacan 28.318 toneladas de granulado de caucho utilizado como relleno en cerca de 280 campos de fútbol de césped artificial, 20.767 toneladas para la construcción de aproximadamente 4.100 parques infantiles y 1.674 toneladas de polvo de caucho que se incorporaron en 160 kilómetros de carreteras, entre otros. En la carta de la Memoria, Gabriel Leal, director General de SIGNUS subraya que 2021 ha sido el año de la recuperación del mercado de reposición español por lo que se ha gestionado un 17,3% más que en el ejercicio anterior. El Director General de SIGNUS destaca también que en 2021 se han gestionado por primera vez los neumáticos con un diámetro superior a 1.400 mm., obligación añadida recientemente en el Real Decreto que regula las gestión de los neumáticos fuera de uso. También es destacable el hecho de que SIGNUS recoge en prácticamente la totalidad de los talleres que cambian neumáticos en nuestro país, alcanzado el número de 25.820 talleres atendidos en 2021. SIGNUS ha continuado durante el pasado ejercicio trabajando en dar valor a los materiales procedentes del reciclaje de los neumáticos, como lleva haciendo desde que comenzó su actividad en 2006, trabajando para ello de la mano de empresas privadas, universidades y centros tecnológicos con el objetivo de garantizar el futuro del reciclado y maximizar el valor de todos sus componentes. Durante 2021 gran parte de los esfuerzos y estudios realizados están relacionados con la propuesta de restricción de uso de microplásticos añadidos intencionadamente que prohibiría el empleo de granulado de caucho como relleno en los campos de césped artificial. En esta línea, SIGNUS ha puesto en marcha un proyecto de monitorización de un campo de fútbol de césped artificial con el fin de evaluar la eficacia de las medidas de contención que evitarían la liberación de estas partículas al medio ambiente. En paralelo, ha habido otros desarrollos en diferentes sectores productivos tales como pastillas de freno o pantallas acústicas de hormigón con caucho reciclado, además de estudios relacionados con el empleo de polvo de caucho en carreteras, una de las actuales aplicaciones de reciclaje que no termina de alcanzar el gran potencial de consumo que tiene. n SIGNUS has just published its Annual Report for the year 2021, which is available on its website. In 2021, SIGNUS managed 200,286 tonnes of end-of-life tyres, converting them into new products for use in different applications. 11.4% of the tyres collected were prepared for reuse (second-use or rethreaded tyres), 36.4% were sent for energy recovery and the remaining 52.3% were recycled at different processing plants in Spain and converted into products for different applications. The main applications of the material obtained from end-of-life tyres in 2021 included: 28,318 tonnes of crumb rubber for use as infill to produce around 280 artificial turf football pitches, 20,767 tonnes for the construction of approximately 4,100 playgrounds and 1,674 tonnes of crumb rubber used in the construction of 160 kilometres of road. In the introduction to the Report, Gabriel Leal, Director General of SIGNUS highlights the fact that 2021 was a year of recovery in the Spanish replacement market, with 17.3% more tyres being managed than in the previous year. The Director General of SIGNUS also points out that tyres with diameters of over 1,400 mm were managed for the first time in 2021. This recently became compulsory under the provisions of the Royal Decree governing the management of end-of-life tyres. Also of note is the fact that SIGNUS collects ELTs from practically all workshops offering tyre-changing services in Spain, with a total of 25,820 workshops being served in 2021. Last year, SIGNUS continued to work on adding value to the materials from tyre recycling, as it has been doing since commencing operations in 2006. The organisation works hand in hand with private companies, universities and technology centres with the aim of guaranteeing the future of recycling and maximising the value of all end-of-life tyre components. Much of the work and research carried out in 2021 was related to the proposed restriction on the use of intentionally added microplastics, which would prohibit the use of crumb rubber as infill in artificial turf pitches. In this respect, SIGNUS has undertaken a project to monitor an artificial turf football pitch to evaluate the effectiveness of containment measures designed to prevent the release of these particles into the environment.
