Es de recibo, en estos 40 años de existencia de esta federación, volver a recordar a todos aquellos pioneros del reciclaje en España, auténticos protagonistas de que hoy podamos presumir del crecimiento exponencial vivido a lo largo de estos 40 años. Por eso, el eslogan elegido para conmemorar estas cuatro décadas de FER, “Vivir para reciclar, reciclar para vivir”, es un más que merecido homenaje a todas aquellas empresas que, gracias a su tesón, esfuerzo y dedicación, han hecho posible que hoy al menos podamos soñar con ese nuevo modelo de economía circular hacia el que transita Europa. También es una llamada a la acción a la ciudadanía –reciclar, para vivir– para apostar por un consumo más responsable, en el que se tenga muy en cuenta la generación de residuos, porque no conviene olvidar que el mejor residuo es el que no se genera. Es, en suma, una forma condensada de expresar que todos los eslabones de la cadena de valor del reciclaje son fundamentales para su funcionamiento óptimo, más aún ahora que cumplir con los objetivos fijados por Bruselas está cada vez más cerca en el tiempo y, en algunos flujos de residuos, nuestro país aún tiene muchos deberes que hacer para lograr alcanzarlos. Más allá de los porcentajes y las cifras sobre reciclado con los que evaluar el cambio acontecido en estas cuatro décadas de existencia de FER, que son obviamente esclarecedores, si algo hemos aprendido en estos 40 años es que, en lo referente al modelo de economía circular, no hay un plan B ni un planeta B. Acontecimientos recientes como la pandemia del coronavirus, la crisis energética, la escasez de materias primas básicas en los mercados globales o la invasión rusa de Ucrania son toda una llamada de atención para acelerar la transición a este nuevo modelo. With time, the need arose to join forces in the defence of their interests, and this unity is the recurring theme of FER. As we now celebrate 40 years in existence, it is fitting once again to remember all those pioneers of recycling in Spain, the true protagonists of the exponential growth experienced during this period. Therefore, the slogan chosen to commemorate these four decades of FER, “Live to recycle, recycle to live”, is a well-deserved tribute to all those companies whose tenacity, effort and dedication have enabled us to at least dream of this new circular economy model towards which Europe is moving. It is also a call to action for citizens - recycle to live - to commit to more responsible consumption, in which waste production is very much taken into account, because it should not be forgotten that the best waste is the waste that is not produced. This is a condensed way of saying that all the links in the recycling value chain are essential for its optimal functioning, especially now that the deadlines for meeting the targets set by Brussels are drawing ever nearer and Spain has a long way to go to achieve them in some waste streams. Beyond the obviously enlightening recycling rates and figures used to measure the change that has taken place in these four decades of FER’s existence, if there is one thing we have learnt in these 40 years it is that, when it comes to the circular economy, there is no plan B or planet B. Recent events such as the coronavirus pandemic, the energy crisis, the shortage of basic raw materials in global markets and the Russian invasion of Ukraine are a wake-up call to accelerate the transition to this new model. Recycling is no longer an option but rather an obligation to ensure our well-being and that of future generations.
