Cualquier tiempo pasado fue mejor, manifiestan algunos pensadores aferrados a la melancolía de un mundo utópico e inexistente. Lo cierto es que alejados de ese sentimiento romántico de la nostalgia, creo que la sociedad en general ha ido avanzando en la mejora de muchos aspectos que involucran al ser humano y al propio bienestar del planeta. Es cierto que si nos retrotraemos a la Edad Media, no encontraríamos por aquel entonces rastro alguno del calentamiento global, pero tampoco hallaríamos el conocimiento y la preocupación que existe en la sociedad actual por cuidar el medio ambiente. Del mismo modo, desde nuestra experiencia con la gestión de los envases agrícolas, podemos asegurar que la evolución en la mejora ambiental ha sido notable. La gestión de estos envases es una responsabilidad única y exclusiva del agricultor, salvo para los productos fitosanitarios, desde la aparición del Real Decreto 1416/2001, hace 20 años, por el que se obligó a estos fabricantes a organizar un sistema de recogida y gestión. ¿Qué se hacía entonces con esos envases? En la etiqueta de esos productos se recomendaba enterrarlos alejados de las corrientes de agua o quemarlos con los restos de poda. Ahora esto nos parece una autentica aberración, al igual que cuando se podía fumar en los hospitales o en los aviones. Con la llegada de la norma se creó SIGFITO, una solución ambiental para que los envases de fitosanitarios fueran depositados por el agricultor en un punto de recogida (cooperativa agraria o distribuidor de productos agrarios) para su valorización, en lugar abandonarlos en la naturaleza. Y así, desde hace justo 20 años, el reciclaje de los envases de fitosanitarios contribuye al gran hito para la agricultura del siglo XXI, el cuidado del medio ambiente. La evolución en las recogidas en estas dos décadas es más que considerable, SIGFITO comenzó su actividad en 2002 recogiendo solo 54 toneladas, un 1,9% de los envases puestos en el mercado, en 2021 hemos recogido 5.012 toneladas, lo que supone un 63% de los envases adheridos. Aún hay mucha labor que realizar en temas de concienciación, pero el aumento en la concienciación del sector agrario en estos 20 años se refleja con estos datos. A partir de aquí, durante todo 2022 trabajaremos para encajar el segundo gran hito que revolucionará el reciclaje de los envases en todos los sectores industriales. Se trata de la aprobación la Ley de Residuos y el Real Decreto de Envases. It is true that if we went back to the Middle Ages, we would not find any trace of global warming, but neither would we find the knowledge and concern for the environment that exists in today’s society. Similarly, our experience in the management of agricultural packaging enables us to state categorically that progress in the area of environmental enhancement has been remarkable. The management of agricultural packaging is the sole and exclusive responsibility of the farmer, with the exception of phytosanitary products. This has been the case since the enactment of Royal Decree 1416/2001 20 years ago, which obliged these manufacturers of these products to organise a collection and management system. What was done prior to that with this packaging? The label on these products recommended burying them far from waterways or burning them with pruning waste. This now seems a complete aberration to us, in the same way as when smoking was allowed in hospitals or on aeroplanes. The advent of this legislation led to the creation of SIGFITO, an environmental solution for the farmer to deposit phytosanitary packaging at a collection point (agricultural cooperative or distributor of agricultural products) to enable them to be recovered, rather than abandoning them in nature. Thus, for the last 20 years, the recycling of phytosanitary product packaging has been contributing to the greatest milestone for agriculture in the 21st century, namely environmental protection. The evolution of the collection of this waste in these two decades has been more than considerable. SIGFITO started out in 2002 collecting only 54 tonnes, 1.9% of the packaging placed on the market. In 2021 we collected 5,012 tonnes, 63% of the packaging placed on the market by member producers. There is still a great deal of work to be done in terms of awareness, but the increase in awareness in the agricultural sector in these 20 years is reflected in these figures. Taking this as a starting point, we will be working throughout 2022 to adapt to the second major milestone that will revolutionise packaging recycling in all industrial sectors, i.e., the passing of the Waste Act and the Royal Decree on Packaging.
