Last September, the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations) and the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) acknowledged the achievements of BioAgro in the “Digital Excellence in Sustainable Agriculture” awards for Europe and Asia. Recognition of this type is helping the company to grow in the conservative sector of agriculture, which is facing the challenges of digitisation and being competitive in increasingly global markets. In fact, BrioAgro is already operating in Spain, Portugal and Italy, as well as in Mexico and the USA. The company has over 400 systems installed and experience in 40 different types of irrigated crops, from greenhouse crops to outdoor crops, horticulture, fruit trees, cereals, lettuce, red fruits, woody crops, etc. The company is prepared to work with any irrigated crop and BioAgro makes it easy for farmers to adapt the methodology and expertise to a crop, even if that particular crop has not been documented. One of BioAgro’s main differentiating features is its soil moisture calibration algorithm, which enables the characterisation of each soil type for each crop. Once the soil moisture calibration has been carried out, the system displays updated moisture values every 12 minutes with respect to the field capacity, which is 100 %. Every farm fitted with the BrioAgro system has a geolocated weather station which displays 15 weather indicators that are updated every 15 minutes, plus hourly weather forecasts for the next 7 and 15 days. In the case of greenhouses, the information on what is happening outside and inside (when microclimate sensors are installed inside the greenhouse) is displayed on comparative graphs. Satellite technology has enabled the servicing of large farms while significantly reducing monitoring costs. BrioAgro has developed a system to achieve maximum irrigation homogenisation on open farms, based on NDWi and NDVi multispectral satellite image indicators. A single soil moisture guide sensor enables the extrapolation of information to the rest of the farm. And the company is working on the incorporation of new indicators with interpreted information that adopt a practical approach. The BMD or BioAgro Monitoring Device (Gateway), where the wired sensors are connected, is a self-contained wireless box powered by an integrated mini solar panel and a rechargeable battery. This BMD can communicate with the internet cloud via: Sigfox - LoRA - LTE-M - Narrow Band - GPRS. The farmer does not enter into this choice, as the most appropriate technology for each farm will be used. For example, in Spain, Sigfox is the technology with the widest coverage, while Narrow Band has the best coverage in Italy. With the focus particularly on countries with communications problems, BioAgro is currently working on satellite internet communications, such as Elon Mask’s Starlink constellation, The systems can be adapted to any type of farm and crop and are capable of achieving water savings of between 20 and 50 %.
