COP26 neglected waste management to a large extent. If it had promoted actions to maximise recycling, it would have led to a reduction in the consumption of energy and materials to produce goods. This applies to metals, glass, cardboard, plastics, and particularly to organic matter. One of the targets set at COP26 is to cut methane emissions by 30% by 2030, and waste management has a decisive role to play. We need to be aware that 60% of the world’s waste ends up in landfills, and 41% of these are uncontrolled, meaning that methane emissions from them are also uncontrolled. These uncontrolled landfills are usually located in middle and low-income countries. Half of Spain’s methane emissions come from human (32%) and animal (18%) waste management. A global alliance of organic waste recycling associations has called on world leaders to make COP26 a turning point in the history of organic waste recycling. Food waste accounts for almost 50% of total emissions from waste treatment, so recycling it will greatly reduce this major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, returning compost and organic matter to the soil, which acts as the largest terrestrial carbon sink, helps to combat climate change. Organic recycling is a carbon sequestration tool that can also provide added benefits in renewable energy production, improved water quality and conservation, and food security. Ultimately, COP26 was a decaffeinated summit, and one which seems unlikely to get us out of the loop in which the world seems trapped following the progress made at COP21, back in 2015 in Paris. La COP26 ha dejado de lado en buena parte la gestión de residuos. De haber impulsado actuaciones para maximizar el reciclaje se habría conducido a la reducción del consumo de energía y materiales para producir bienes, siendo esto aplicable tanto a metales como vidrio, cartón o plásticos, y especialmente a la materia orgánica. Uno de los objetivos que sí se han definido en la COP26, es recortar las emisiones de metano en un 30% para 2030, y aquí la gestión de residuos es decisiva. Debemos saber que el 60% de los residuos del mundo acaban en vertederos, y el 41% son no controlados y en los que la emisión de metano está fuera de control. Estos vertederos incontrolados suelen estar en países de renta media y baja. En el caso de España, la mitad de las emisiones de metano proceden de la gestión de residuos, humanos (32%) y animales (18%). Una Alianza Global de asociaciones para el reciclaje de residuos orgánicos, ha hecho un llamamiento a los líderes mundiales con el fin de que la COP26, sea un punto de inflexión en la historia del reciclaje de los residuos orgánicos. Los residuos alimentarios representan casi el 50% de las emisiones totales procedentes del tratamiento de residuos, por lo que su reciclaje reducirá en buena medida esta importante fuente de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero. Asimismo, cuando el compost y la materia orgánica se devuelven al suelo, que actúa como el mayor sumidero de carbono terrestre, se intensifica este papel en la lucha contra el cambio climático. Además, el reciclaje orgánico es una herramienta de captura de carbono que también puede aportar beneficios añadidos en la producción de energía renovable, la mejora de la calidad y conservación del agua y la seguridad alimentaria. Como cierre, volviendo a la COP26, una cumbre descafeinada, que parece que no va a permitir salir del bucle en el que parece haberse instalado el mundo tras los avances de la COP21, allá por 2015 en París.
