Nadie dijo que sea fácil, pero hace tiempo que la sostenibilidad dejó de ser una opción si queremos dejar a nuestros hijos un mundo al menos parecido al que nos dejaron nuestros padres. En CyG It Sustainable Tech creemos que el sector tecnológico tiene mucho que aportar a esta transición ecológica, por su carácter transversal en la sociedad y su fuerza tractora en la economía. Y es que según datos de la ONU, producimos más de 50 millones de toneladas al año de Residuos de Aparatos Eléctricos y Electrónicos (RAEE), lo que se traduce en 1 millón de toneladas al año sólo en España. Además, y según datos de este mismo organismo, el 80% de estos RAEE termina en vertederos de China y África donde se ha desarrollado toda una economía en torno a la venta de segunda mano, piezas de repuesto o extracción de metales al margen de todo criterio ambiental. Desde la compañía apostamos sin duda por un modelo en el que la reparación no sólo sea la alternativa más económica para el consumidor, sino también la más atractiva en términos medioambientales y sociales. El amplio expertise en el proceso de reparación y consiguiente reutilización que nos aporta la experiencia de 17 años en el sector, con una media de 500.000 dispositivos reparados al año, nos indica que pasos como el ‘Derecho a Reparar’ aprobado en noviembre del año pasado en el Parlamento Europeo se sitúan en la buena dirección. Según esta nueva normativa, los fabricantes de tecnología deberán informar al consumidor mediante un etiquetaje concreto sobre el grado de ‘reparabilidad’ de todos y cada uno de los dispositivos electrónicos. According to UN figures, we produce more than 50 million tonnes of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) per annum, and 1 million tonnes per year in Spain alone. UN data also point to the fact that 80% of this WEEE ends up in landfills in China and Africa, where a whole economy has developed around the sale of second-hand goods, spare parts or the extraction of metals without any environmental criteria. The company is committed to a model in which repair is not only the most economical alternative for the consumer, but also the most attractive in environmental and social terms. Our extensive expertise in the repair and reuse process, based on 17 years of experience in the sector, with an average of 500,000 repaired devices per annum, indicates that measures such as the ‘Right to Repair’, approved in November last year by the European Parliament, are a step in the right direction. This new regulation obliges technology manufacturers to inform consumers about the degree of ‘repairability’ of each and every electronic device by means of a specific label. Through consumer awareness and information, the aim is to reward those products on the market that make things easier when the device, for whatever reason, is faulty, defective or simply no longer operational. The European Union, and specifically the Commission, are immersed in the development of a major framework programme called the European Green Deal, through which sustainable criteria will be at the centre of all commercial activities of the 27 Member States. In Spain, programmes recently presented by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO), such as the first Circular Economy Action Plan, focus on fundamental aspects of sustainability in the sector. These include the promotion of ‘Preparation for Reuse Centres to extend the service life of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment’, the creation of a national database of these centres, and making European EMAS environmental certification a requirement for companies wishing to participate in public procurement procedures.
