En este contexto de vulnerabilidad, la huella hídrica y la huella de agua son indicadores cada vez más utilizados en la estrategia de sostenibilidad en empresas de todos los sectores. Desde la Red EsAgua confiamos en el poder de las alianzas y la responsabilidad compartida, imprescindibles para cumplir los objetivos tal y como marca el último de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS 17). El año 2020, marcado por la pandemia de la COVID-19, ha evidenciado la importancia de respetar y cuidar los ecosistemas y los recursos naturales, pues su cuidado tiene una importancia vital para la salud del planeta y las personas. 2020 también ha marcado el inicio de la “Década para la acción”, arrancando una cuenta atrás de 10 años para dar respuesta a las pautas de la Agenda 2030 y los 17 Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS). Este nuevo marco de sostenibilidad global no sólo ofrece una respuesta a muchos de los desafíos actuales, también es una herramienta para crear sociedades más resilientes, preparadas para responder a los retos de nuestro tiempo y del futuro. De la misma forma que los recursos naturales son vitales para todos, su cuidado también debe ser una tarea común, un ejercicio de responsabilidad compartida. Gobiernos, empresas y ciudadanos, todos jugamos un papel clave en el uso responsable y sostenible de los recursos que utilizamos en nuestro día a día. Durante el año 2020 también se ha hecho evidente la importancia del acceso al agua en nuestras vidas, pues no sólo ha sido un recurso clave para combatir el COVID-19 a través del lavado de manos, sino que también ha sido destacado por las oportunidades que la buena gestión del agua ofrece en términos de adaptación y mitigación del Cambio Climático. Prueba de ello es el último Informe de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Desarrollo de los Recursos Hídricos en el Mundo, que hace un llamamiento a todos los estados para que se comprometan frente al deterioro de los recursos hídricos y destaca la importancia de la buena gestión del agua para paliar las consecuencias del calentamiento global. A pesar de ser esencial para sostener la vida, el desarrollo y el medio ambiente, el agua dulce es un recurso finito y vulnerable. Aunque consideremos su abundancia y disponibilidad por su ciclo natural, se trata de uno de los recursos que presenta mayores desafíos a la hora de garantizar su acceso y distribución de forma sostenible. Según el World Resources Institute (WRI), 33 países sufrirán estrés hídrico severo en 2040, lo que significa que presentarán una demanda de agua mucho mayor a la cantidad disponible. Entre estos 33 países se encuentra España, uno de los países europeos que enfrenta más estrés hídrico en Europa y, según el Panel Intergubernamental del expertos sobre el Cambio Climático, (IPCC), también es una de las zonas más amenazadas por las consecuencias del calentamiento global. The year 2020,marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, illustrated the importance of respecting and caring for ecosystems and natural resources, and how vital this is for the health of the planet and the people who inhabit it. 2020 alsomarked the beginning of the “Decade of Action”and a ten-year countdown to respond to the 2030 Agenda guidelines and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).This newglobal sustainability network not only offers a response tomany current challenges but it is also a tool to createmore resilient societies ready to respond to the challenges of our times and those of the future. In the same way that natural resources are vital for all, the care of these resources must also be a common endeavour, an exercise of shared responsibility. Governments, businesses and citizens all play a key role in the responsible, sustainable use of the resources we use in our daily lives. 2020 also clear demonstrated the importance of access to water in our lives. Not only has water been a key resource to combat COVID-19 through handwashing, but the opportunities afforded by good water management in terms of adaptation to and mitigation of climate change have also been underlined. Proof of this is provided by the latest UNWorldWater Development Report, which calls on all states to make a commitment to tackling the deterioration of water resources and highlights the importance of good water management to mitigate the consequences of global warming. Despite being essential to sustain life, development and the environment, fresh water is a finite, vulnerable resource. Although we might consider it to be abundantly available due to its natural cycle, it is, in fact, amongst the resources that present the greatest challenges in terms of guaranteeing sustainable access and distribution. According to theWorld Resources Institute (WRI), 33 countries will suffer from extremely high water stress by 2040, meaning that the demand for water will be far greater than the quantity available. These 33 countries include Spain, one of the countries with the highest water stress in Europe and which, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is also amongst the most threatened by the consequences of global warming. All this data is evidence of a fact: that humanity uses too much water. But what are we using it for? The concept of water footprint can help us answer this question.
