A fondo: Análisis 2020 | In depth: Analysis of 2020 Nos encontramos en un momento de crisis y oportunidad, ilusionante y desafiante a la vez. Aparentemente comenzamos el final de la crisis y se abren nuevas oportunidades para el sector por medio de los nuevos fondos europeos. El agua entra en el mercado de futuros de materias primas en Estados Unidos: abrimos expectantes una nueva década. Ahora sí, por fin, cerramos una década (y un año, digamos, peculiar) y nos adentramos en la tercera década de este siglo. Este año ha sido ciertamente muy extraño, sin duda el más extraño que hayamos conocido nunca ninguno de nosotros. El sector del agua ha sido un importante protagonista en estos meses (aunque a gran parte de la población le haya pasado desapercibido) en varios aspectos; fuimos considerados (como no podría ser de otro modo) sector esencial, y se han mantenido con calidad y sin interrupción los servicios de abastecimiento (de población, regadío e industria) y saneamiento y, por otro lado, el análisis del virus en las aguas residuales se ha revelado como una importante herramienta para la evaluación de la extensión de esta u otras pandemias. En estos meses lo hemos dicho muchos, muchas veces y muy alto, aunque parece que no era necesario ya que no había muchas dudas: el agua en España ha sido, es y será segura. En todos los estudios realizados a la salida de las depuradoras y tratamientos terciarios no se han detectado restos del sars-cov-2 y por supuesto tampoco en aguas potables, gracias a los procesos establecidos de tratamiento y desinfección. También es de destacar el fuerte impulso que ha sufrido nuestro sector en la transformación digital; la necesidad ha convertido amuchos escépticos en auténticos creyentes en la tecnología, y quizá hemos avanzado en meses lo que habría costado años para su implantación en condiciones normales. En poco tiempo, han progresado y proliferado los gemelos digitales y los sistemas de asistencia técnica remota, los modelos y algoritmos que optimizan la operación o el consumo de energía, el big data, la inteligencia artificial y el machine learning, tecnologías que inicialmente servirán de apoyo a la toma de decisiones y en el futuro quizá para la autogestión inteligente de nuestros sistemas de tratamiento y distribución de agua. Nuestra asociación, AEDyR, también se ha adaptado a los nuevos tiempos: ante la imposibilidad de la celebración de nuestro congreso internacional bienal de forma presencial, incluso con varios aplazamientos, decidimos realizarlo on-line a lo largo de distintas sesiones. La primera de ellas, celebrada a finales de noviembre, y que denominamos pre-congreso, fue un éxito de público y crítica, con récord absoluto de inscritos e importantes invitados y presentaciones. Y durante el primer semestre de 2021 tendrán lugar las sesiones on-line del congreso que se dividirán por temática e incluirán las ponencias técnicas recibidas, mesas redondas y otras actividades. El nuevo año viene cargado de ilusiones; la ilusión de dejar atrás la pandemia cuanto antes y volver a la normalidad, en la medida de lo We find ourselves at a time of crisis and opportunity, a time of great promise but also one of great challenges. Now, at last, the decade really is coming to an end (and so too is what might be described as a peculiar year) and we are about to enter the third decade of the century. This year has been truly strange, unquestionably the strangest that any of us have known. The water sector has been a leading player in these months in many respects (although this has gone unnoticed by a large portion of the population). As could not be otherwise, we were considered an essential service and water supply to the people, to industry, and for irrigation purposes has been maintained without interruption and with the same high quality as always. This is also true of sanitation, where analysis of the virus in wastewater has proven to be an important tool in evaluating the spread of this and other pandemics. Although it might seem unnecessary because there were never many doubts, throughout these months, many of us have said often and loudly that water in Spain has been and is safe. No traces of sars-cov-2 have been found in analyses carried out at the outlets of wastewater treatment plants and tertiary treatment facilities. It goes without saying that neither have they been found at the outlet of drinking water treatment plants, thanks to the established treatment and disinfection processes implemented. Emphasis should also be put on the great effect of digital transformation on the sector. Necessity has converted many sceptics into believers in technology and we have, perhaps, made the same progress in months that we would have made in years, in normal circumstances. In a brief period, there has been great progress and a proliferation of digital twins, remote technical assistance systems, models and algorithms to optimise operations and energy consumption, big data, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Initially, these technologies will serve to support decision-making processes and, in the future, they will, perhaps, be implemented for smart automated management of our water treatment and supply systems. Our association, the Spanish Association of Desalination and Water Reuse (AEDyR) has also adapted to the new times. Given the impossibility of holding our biennial international congress onsite, despite several postponements, we decided to hold it online and in different sessions. The first session, which we called the pre-congress, was held at the end of November and proved to be a great a success, both critically and with the public. There was an all-time high number of registrations and the event featured eminent guests and excellent presentations.
