Gestión y tratamiento de residuos | Waste Management & Treatment Evolucionar hacia una economía circular representa un reto muy importante para cualquier sociedad por todo lo que ello implica: un uso más eficiente de los recursos y una reducción de la explotación de materias primas, garantizando así un futuro más sostenible. En Valencia, ese objetivo se ha conseguido. Generalitat Valenciana, Ecovidrio y la Entidad Metropolitana para el Tratamiento de Residuos –EMTRE-, junto al resto de agentes implicados como consorcios, hosteleros y ciudadanos, han trabajado conjuntamente para lograr cerrar el círculo de reciclado de vidrio, convirtiéndose en el área metropolitana más grande de España en conseguirlo. Atrás quedará el modelo económico basado en la estructura lineal que durante tanto tiempo ha estado explotando nuestro planeta. Y es que, gracias a este nuevo sistema de economía circular, vamos a conseguir que los residuos que generamos y que antes iban a parar a los vertederos, se conviertan en recursos con valor que se puedan reciclar y reaprovechar. En el caso concreto del vidrio, este efecto se multiplica ya que este material se puede reciclar infinitas veces, pasando de residuo a recurso cada vez que se deposita un envase de vidrio en los contenedores verdes de Ecovidrio. Si a esto le sumamos la gran concienciación social de reciclar que existe en Valencia, donde en los últimos 5 años la recogida de envases de vidrio se ha incrementado casi un 10% en la zona metropolitana, el resultado no puede ser más óptimo. This goal has been achieved in Valencia. The Valencian Government, Ecovidrio and the MetropolitanWaste Treatment Entity (EMTRE), along with all other actors involved, such as the hospitality sector and citizens, have worked together to close the glass recycling loop, making Valencia the largest metropolitan area in Spain to achieve this milestone. The economic model based on a linear structure, which for so long has exploited our planet, has been left behind. This new circular economy model will enable the waste we produce, and which was previously landfilled, to be converted into resources of value that can be recycled and reused. In the specific case of glass, the effect is multiplied because this material can be recycled an infinite number of times and be converted from waste into a resource each and every time a glass container is deposited in one of Ecovidrio’s green collection containers. If we add this to the great social awareness of the importance of recycling in Valencia, where in the last five years glass collection has risen by almost 10% in the metropolitan area, the result could not be better. New glass container recovery model at the Manises municipal waste treatment plant The inauguration in October of the new glass container recovery module at the Manises municipal waste treatment plant represents the definitive drive to closing the glass recycling loop and making the circular economy a reality. These new facilities join those already up and running in the Valencian district of Quart de Poblet. Only through this economic and production strategy will it be possible to reduce the use of raw materials in production processes and, thus, minimise the generation of unrecyclable waste. Ultimately, it means committing to a system of resource use based on the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The aim of this new facility is to recover 3,500 tonnes per annum of glass container waste not correctly separated by the citizens of Valencia, in order to prevent it from being landfilled and enable it to enjoy a better life, the life of recycling.
