Este nuevo plan se enmarca dentro del Pacto Verde Europeo (The European Green Deal), una hoja de ruta “integral” con acciones para conseguir que Europa se convierta en el primer continente climáticamente neutro en 2050. El nuevo Plan de Acción de Economía Circular presenta un conjunto de iniciativas interrelacionadas y muy centradas en el diseño e información de productos cuyo fin es, entre otros, reducir la producción de residuos y garantizar que la UE disponga de un eficiente mercado interior de materias primas recicladas de alta calidad. Los plásticos tienen un gran valor durante su uso gracias a sus excelentes propiedades. Son versátiles, ligeros, nos permiten ahorrar energía, contribuyen a evitar el desperdicio alimentario entre otros beneficios y aportan seguridad. Este material nos protege ante cualquier bacteria, virus, o peligro sanitario y así lo demuestra las continuas recomendaciones ante la crisis sanitaria de la COVID-19, de utilización de mascarillas, guantes, y todo tipo de material desechable hecho con plásticos. Los plásticos en contacto con alimentos son los materiales más regulados por parte de las autoridades y, por ende, los más seguros. Sus características ofrecen la mayor protección del alimento con el que están en contacto, ayudando a evitar la propagación de epidemias y enfermedades. Pero todas estas ventajas desaparecen si no gestionamos correctamente el residuo reciclándolo y valorizándolo. Al final de su vida útil, los plásticos tienen valor convirtiéndose en nuevos recursos. Gracias al reciclado mecánico de los mismos se pueden fabricar nuevos productos y, cuando no es posible, también se pueden transformar de nuevo en polímeros a través del reciclado químico, que se está empezando a implantar, consiguiendo una calidad similar a la materia prima virgen. Sin embargo, para dar un paso más en el incremento de capacidad y calidad es necesario impulsar todavía más la demanda de plástico reciclado. Plastics in contact with food are the materials most subject to regulation by authorities and, therefore, the safest. The characteristics of plastic offer the greatest possible protection to the food they come into contact with and help to prevent the propagation of epidemics and disease. But all these advantages count for nothing if we fail tomanage plastic waste correctly by recovering and recycling it. End-of-life plastics are of value if they are converted into new resources.Mechanical recycling of plastics enables newproducts to bemanufactured.When this is not possible, plastics can also be transformed once again into polymers through chemical recycling,which is nowbeginning to be implemented and can achieve a quality similar to that of the virgin rawmaterial. Nonetheless, in order to increase capacity and quality, the demand for recycled plastic must be fostered evenmore. Ecodesign, more product information for consumers and new markets for recycled plastics…the keys to accelerating the circularity of plastics It is vital to work from the very outset, from the moment when the idea to manufacture a product is born. Therefore, ecodesign specifically geared to product recyclability is very important. But ecodesign must be combined with consumer information and this is an area in which considerable improvement is required.
