A fondo | In depth Es un honor para mí escribir esta tribuna como nuevo presidente de la Asociación Internacional de Desalación (IDA), pero en primer lugar quiero hacer balance del 2019 con Almar Water Solutions. Este año ha sido muy significativo para la compañía porque se han firmado importantes alianzas y adjudicaciones. AlmarWater Solutions ha consolidado su porfolio de proyectos con la incorporación de la desaladora de 450.000 m3/d de Shuqaiq 3 en Arabia Saudí y la desaladora de Mombasa en Kenia, la adquisición de la depuradora de aguas residuales de Muharraq en Bahréin, un acuerdo estratégico con Hassan AllamUtilities en Egipto para la creación de una JV que nos permita desarrollar proyectos en la región y la compra de una empresa de tratamiento de agua en Chile. Y todavía nos guardamos algunas sorpresas interesantes para finales de año. Estoy muy orgulloso del equipo que hemos creado y de la motivación por cada uno de los proyectos en los que nos vemos involucrados. Con este equipo y su experiencia, estoy seguro de que llegaremos a tener una gran valoración y reconocimiento en el sector del agua, con un compromiso firme por la mejora de la calidad de vida de millones de personas y por buscar soluciones contra la crisis climática. Soy miembro de IDA desde hace 22 años, aunque con una participación mucho más activa desde hace seis, y he estado profundamente implicado en el cambio que la asociación requería para afrontar su crecimiento en un momento en el que los recursos no convencionales de agua entran a formar parte de la solución al gran déficit de agua que padecemos. He evolucionado con ella, pasando de ser afiliado a director, más tarde tesorero y miembro del comité de operaciones, para finalizar como presidente en este último periodo. Es todo un orgullo para mí, y una gran responsabilidad que afronto con mucha ilusión. Desde estas líneas quiero agradecer la confianza depositada en mí por parte del consejo al completo y de su directora general, Shannon McCarthy. Todos ellos han contribuido, con su dedicación, liIt is an honour for me to write this opinion article as the new President of the International Desalination Association (IDA). But, first of all, I would like to look back on 2019 as CEO of Almar Water Solutions. This has been a very significant year for the company, which has entered into very important alliances and secured a number of large contracts. Almar Water Solutions has consolidated its project portfolio through the addition of the Shuqaiq 3 desalination plant in Arabia Saudí, with a capacity of 450,000 m3/d, the acquisition of the Muharraq wastewater treatment plant in Bahrain, a strategic agreement with Hassan Allam Utilities in Egypt for the creation of a JV that will enable us to develop projects in the region, and the acquisition of a water treatment company in Chile. And we still have a few interesting surprises up our sleeve for the end of the year. I am very proud of the team we have created and the motivation we have for each of the projects in which we are involved.With this team and the experience it boasts, I am convinced that we will achieve great recognition and prestige within the water sector, particularly given the company’s firm commitment to improving the quality of life of millions of people and to seeking solutions to combat the climate crisis. I have been a member of the IDA for 22 years, but my participation has been far more active in the last six. I have been heavily involved in the change needed by the association to address its growth at a time when non-conventional water resources have become part of the solution to the great water deficit we are facing. I have evolved with the association, going from being a member to a director, then treasurer and a member of the Operations Committee and finally becoming President recently. It is a great honour for me and a responsibility I assume with great enthusiasm. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire board and particularly Secretary General Shannon McCarthy for the confidence shown in me. All of these people have contributed through their dedication, leadership and know-how to adapting the association to what the market and members demand, thereby making the IDA the leading association in desalination, reuse, and advanced solutions in the water sector. Some of this success is embodied in the IDAWorld Congress, the world-renowned desalination and water treatment solutions event, which was held last October in Dubai.
