Es por ello, que la desalación se presenta como una solución tecnológica viable y segura para conseguir agua de distintas calidades según su uso. Si además contamos con energías renovables para responder a su alta demanda energética, obtenemos una solución real y limpia como pocas. De hecho, en países de Oriente Medio supone ya un porcentaje muy alto del suministro de agua potable. Otra tecnología, aún menos explotada y promovida, a la vez que más controvertida por su escaso conocimiento, es la reutilización. Se estima que en la actualidad tan sólo el 4% de toda el agua consumida en el mundo es reutilizada y esto es por la poca concienciación y educación que hay sobre ella, además de por las diferencias en la regulación y las normativas que existen en cada país. Los usos agrícola e industrial son los que mayor desarrollo están teniendo, sin embargo, la potabilización directa o indirecta cuenta con menor aceptación, aunque tecnológicamente ya es viable. Para promover estas tecnologías y otros avances en soluciones de tratamiento de agua, nace el evento más reconocido del sector: IDA World Congress. Este año, el congreso vuelve a Dubái, desde donde los líderes de la industria del agua, tanto pública como privada, se reunirán para desarrollar oportunidades de negocio, intercambiar ideas, compartir conocimientos sobre tecnologías de vanguardia e impulsar un futuro más sostenible. Expertos en los campos de desalación y reutilización, energía, medio ambiente, financiación, legislación, etc. aportarán ideas para seguir avanzando en el desarrollo de soluciones presentes y futuras. We live on a planet surrounded by water, mainly salt water in seas and oceans. Therefore, the resource is available in sufficient quantity but it is not fit for human consumption, or industrial and agricultural applications. For this reason, desalination stands out as a viable, safe technology to obtain water of different qualities in accordance with use. If we add the use of renewable sources in response to the high energy requirements of the technology, we have a genuine and clean solution akin to few others. In fact, in Middle Eastern countries, desalination now accounts for a very high percentage of drinking water supply. Another technology, albeit it less exploited and promoted, and one that is increasingly controversial due to scant knowledge of it, is reuse. It is estimated that only 4% of all the water currently consumed worldwide is reused. This is due to lack of awareness and education as well as to differences in legislation and regulation on water reuse in different countries. Agricultural and industrial uses are those that have been developed most. However, direct potable reuse does not have the same degree of acceptation, despite its technological feasibility. The sector’s most renowned event, the IDAWorld Congress, was created to promote these technologies and other breakthroughs in water treatment solutions. This year, the Congress returns to Dubai, where water industry leaders, both public and private, will meet to develop business opportunities, exchange ideas, share know-how on cuttingedge technologies and foster a more sustainable future. Experts in the fields of desalination and reuse, energy, the environment, finance, legislation, etc., will contribute ideas to facilitate continued progress in the development of current and future solutions.
