Internacional | International AlmarWater Solutions y Abdul Latif Jameel, celebraron a primeros de octubre el acto de la primera piedra del proyecto de desalación Shuqaiq 3, junto a sus socios, ACCIONA, Marubeni Corporation y Rawafid Alhadarah Holding Co. La ceremonia tuvo lugar en la localización elegida para construir la planta, a orillas del Mar Rojo, a unos 137 kilómetros al norte de Jizan, en Arabia Saudí. Al acto acudieron varios altos representantes y funcionarios españoles, como D. Álvaro Iranzo, embajador de España en Riad y el consejero de Asuntos Económicos y Financieros de la embajada de España en Riad, José Ramón Ferrandis Muñoz. Por parte de Acciona estuvo presente José Díaz Caneja, director general del negocio de Agua de ACCIONA; Jesús Sancho, Director Gerente de ACCIONA ME y Manuel Manjón, Director de Desarrollo de Negocio de ACCIONA. Además estuvo presente Faisal S. AlSamannoudi, vicepresidente de Abdul Latif Jammel CDC, Rowaid Al Sawaf, director general y Yahia Kafi, director financiero, y por parte de AlmarWater Solutions, Santiago Martínez, director ejecutivo. Shuqaiq 3, cuyo cierre financiero tuvo lugar el pasado mayo, será una de las mayores desaladoras por tecnología de ósmosis inversa del mundo, con una capacidad de producción de 450.000 metros cúbicos al día. El proyecto se desarrollará bajo unmodelo de contrato BOO (build, own, operate en sus siglas en inglés) durante 25 años y su finalización está programada para el cuarto trimestre de 2021. La planta desaladora Shuqaiq 3 supone un alivio importante a la situación de escasez que sufre la zona, ya que garantizará el suministro de agua potable a más de 1,8 millones de ciudadanos, contribuyendo además al desarrollo económico e industrial del país. Tal es su importancia, que el pasado mes recibió el premio “Utilities Project of the Year” en los Middle East Energy Awards 2019 celebrados en Dubai, convirtiéndose en uno de los proyectos más emblemáticos de la región. Según el Foro Mundial del Agua, el 40% de la población árabe ya vive en condiciones de absoluta escasez de agua. Es por eso, que Oriente Medio es una de las geografías donde Almar Water Solutions está poniendo el foco a la hora de desarrollar proyectos innovadores y sostenibles, para garantizar un agua de calidad y en cantidad para su población. Además, Shuqaiq-3 representa un hito importante tanto en términos de responsabilidad económica como social y creará varios miles de empleos desde el inicio de su construcción hasta el final de la concesión, por un plazo de 25 años. El proyecto está perfectamente alineado con la “Visión 2030” de Arabia Saudí, ya que implica una gran cantidad de contenido saudí y se ha fijado el objetivo de incrementar la inversión privada y las oportunidades de empleo local. Entre las medidas de alcance social del proyecto, en los primeros años, el Consorcio impartirá formación académica y práctica a los habitantes de la zona para fomentar el desarrollo de profesionales del sector del agua, en una región que necesita proyectos de este tipo. The event took place at the site chosen for the construction of the plant, on the shores of the Red Sea, approximately 137 kilometres north of Jizan, in Saudi Arabia. The event was attended by several top representatives and officials from Spain including Mr. Alvaro Iranzo, Spanish Ambassador in Riyadh and the Councillor for Economic and Financial Affairs of the Spanish Embassy in Riyadh, José Ramón Ferrandis Muñoz. ACCIONA was represented at the event by José Díaz Caneja, CEO of the ACCIONA Agua business line; Jesús Sancho, Managing Director of ACCIONA ME and Manuel Manjón, Director of Business Development at ACCIONA. The ceremony was also attended by Faisal S. El Samannoudi, Vice-President of Abdul Latif Jameel CDC, along with Rowaid Al Sawaf and Yahia Kafi, General Manager and Chief Financial Officer respectively at Abdul Latif Jameel CDC. Almar Water Solutions was represented by its CEO, Santiago Martínez. Shuqaiq 3, which achieved financial closure in May, will be one of the largest reverse osmosis desalination plants in the world, with a production capacity of 450,000 cubic metres per day. The project will be executed under a 25-year BOO (build, own, operate) contract, and its completion is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2021. The Shuqaiq 3 desalination plant will significantly relieve water shortage in the area by ensuring drinking water supply to more than 1.8 million people, in addition to contributing to the country’s economic and industrial development. The project is of such importance that last month it received the ‘Utilities Project of the Year’ award at the Middle East Energy Awards 2019, held in Dubai, making it a flagship project in the region. According to theWorldWater Forum, 40% of the Arab population lives in conditions of severe water scarcity. For this reason, the Middle East is one of the regions Almar Water Solutions is focusing on for the development of innovative, sustainable projects in order to ensure that the population has access to quality water in sufficient quantity. Shuqaiq-3 also represents an important milestone in terms of both economic and social responsibility and it will create several thousand jobs from the start of construction until the end of the 25-year concession contract. The project is seamlessly aligned with the “2030 Vision” of Saudi Arabia since it involves a great deal of Saudi content and has the objective of increasing private investment and local employment opportunities. In the initial years, measures associated with the social scope of the project will see the Consortium offer academic and practical training to residents in the area, in order to nurture the development of water industry professionals in a region that needs projects of this kind.
