En 2018, en España se reciclaron 893.989 toneladas de residuos de envases de vidrio, lo que representa un crecimiento de un 9% respecto al año anterior, el mayor incremento interanual de la última década. Del total anteriormente mencionado, 840.361 toneladas de residuos de envases provienen de la recogida selectiva a través del contenedor verde, lo que supone un 6,5% más que en 2017. Estas son grandes noticias y se traducen en que cada español recicló más de 18 kg de vidrio, el equivalente a 68 envases por persona. Si analizamos el comportamiento por zonas, encontramos en las primeras posiciones del ranking a Baleares con 30 kg/IPH, Euskadi ocupa la segunda posición con 27,5 kg/hab, seguido de La Rioja (27,5 kg/hab), Navarra (25,9 kg/hab) y Catalunya (21,3kg/hab). Si nos fijamos en capitales de provincia, encontraremos ciudades como San Sebastián, Pamplona y Barcelona que repiten, año tras año, entre las primeras posiciones. Además de la recogida selectiva a través del contenedor verde, en 2018 gestionamos el reciclaje de 53.628 toneladas de residuos de envases de vidrio a través de las 16 plantas de residuos urbanos (RU). If we analyse glass recycling behaviour by regions, we find the Balearic Islands at the head of the table with 30 kg/ capita, Euskadi in second place with 27.5 kg/capita, followed by La Rioja (27.5 kg/capita), Navarra (25.9 kg/capita) and Catalonia (21.3 kg/capita). Looking at the provincial capitals, we find cities such as San Sebastian, Pamplona and Barcelona occupying the top positions year after year. In addition to selective collection by means of the green container, we managed 53,628 tonnes of glass containers in 2018 through 16 municipal solid waste (MSW) treatment plants. Glass container recovery through MSW plants is a pioneering initiative in Europe and it enables the recovery of glass containers deposited, incorrectly, by citizens in refuse bins, with the aim being to prevent these containers from ending up in landfills. The increase in collection through the green container and progress in collection through MSW treatment plants has meant a great leap forward in the recycling rate for glass containers. Our estimates put the 2018 glass container recycling rate at 76.5% (up 3.5% on 2017). The official recycling rate is published annually by the Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO) and the latest available figure is 71.8%, for the year 2016.
