Extremadura, an autonomous community with 41.633 square kilometres distributed between the provinces of Badajoz and Cáceres, which are two of the larger surface area of the country is located in the South-West of Spain. The climate is Mediterranean and some of their main livelihoods continue to be agriculture and animal husbandry.
In the province of Badajoz is the region of La Serena, where approximately 400,000 heads of sheep graze. The breed is the Merino sheep, which is characterized by its great power of adaptation to the natural environment. Cheeses and cakes of this protected designation of origin are the only ones of Spain made only with raw milk from flocks of Merino sheep.
