Auditorio Winterthur in L'illa Diagonal (Barcelona) hosted the past 8-9 November the 18th Edition of the materials compounds/plastics reinforced Conference organized by the Spanish plastics Centre (CEP). The meeting brought together more than 200 professionals involved with the sector, represented by 96 institutions, of which 44 were processing companies, 32 suppliers of raw materials, equipment and auxiliary materials, 9 University departments or centres of technology, 6 magazines specializing in plastics3 business associations and 2 advisers in composite materials.

Luis Pérez Caumons, President of the Spanish plastics Centre (CEP), opened the Conference. He noted more than 30 years of success of the call and said that considerable growth is registering in the materials industry composites, involving more and more high-tech processes. For its part, Paula Bosch, Director of the Institute of science and technology of polymers (CSIC), opened the Conference by a very didactic exhibition about the past, present and future of composite materials.

To facilitate the communication and participation of the assistants conferences were presented in English, through a service of simultaneous translation was available in the Auditorium and Spanish.

During the course of the Conference were presented until 21 conferences and two technical communiqués, that reflected a clear trend towards innovation, looking for more structural applications with the involvement of the cabinets of design, that they are finding solutions to new projects in these materials. Technology specific numerical simulation for composites, that allows to obtain more tuned calculations to improve benefits designs contributes to this.

Items that were presented in the discussions and more impact and interest aroused were those related to structures with composites, their design, their unions with adhesives and their recent applications in Spain in public infrastructure. Also, most of the presentations was devoted to cover new aspects on components for composites and its transformation. The rest of talks dealt with resins; developments in curing unsaturated resins; How to improve the surface appearance of the PRF in order to obtain parts with a best finish, generating new opportunities for these materials; and general issues with regard to the great diversity of composites,

The President of the Organising Committee, Enrique Beneyto, closed 9 November the 18th Conference of material compounds/plastics reinforced. In his speech pointed out the need to involve to the body, awakening in her interest in the application of composite materials reinforced in civil construction, in addition to the commonly used applications: steel and concrete. Also addressed significantly the collective of architects in the same sense, that of them depends on the application of composite materials has a massive application and use in the construction in the future. Beneyto used the occasion to highlight the need to encourage education programs for students of architecture, engineering and chemistry, since to them it depends, to a large extent, the future of these composite materials.
