Repsol YPF acquired the petrochemical complex of Borealis in Portugal
With this operation, Repsol YPF has sought to enhance its presence and capacity-building in the Iberian market. Sines complex consists of a cracker with a volume of approximately 350,000 tonnes of ethylene and 180,000 tonnes of propylene per year and two floors of polyethylene, a low density with a production capacity of 145,000 tonnes and a high density of 130,000 tonnes.
Also, according to officials of the area chemistry of Repsol, with the new acquisition the company can maintain its competitive position in the long term, increase its market share in PE in strategic areas of Europe, and expanded its portfolio of products with new applications not available currently in Spanish Puertollano and Tarragona complexes.
In a meeting with the press, Ignacio Marco, director of the chemistry of Repsol YPF area polyethylene explained that the complex of Sines gives Repsol very positive things, as a complementary range of products and applications in HDPE, PEBD and EBA, as well as advantages in the management of "stocks" and transportation of products.
In the specific case of polyolefins, the production capacity of Repsol, thus a high market share in the region, excellent access to local clients and a slight edge in cost increases by 28 percentall of this, with the ultimate goal of being a regional leader in this sector.
Fernando Galbis, director of polyolefins in the chemistry of Repsol area, highlighted the acquisition the increase in the share of capacity in Western Europe by Repsol, going from a 4.1 per cent in high density to count with a 6.2 per cent; and a 5.7 per cent in low density, passes to 8.2 per cent; In addition to enhance its strategy of strong presence in southern Europe and strengthen its presence in South America, now have better access to maritime transport.
