The MARM supports an initiative for the production of ecological wine covered with Cork

This project, co-funded by the European agricultural fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) with 533.972 euros, within the framework of the National Rural network, and the MARM is developing in the autonomous communities of Andalusia, Catalonia, Extremadura, Valencia, Canary Islands and Castilla - La Mancha, with the idea to serve as benchmark for companies from all over the country and contribute to the integration of best practices in the vineyard and the Cork market.
As stated in the Act, at the present time already there are four wineries, 20 winegrowers, 15 owners of cork oaks and three industrial Cork Stoppers which are part of this initiative, the sustainable management of the territory that turns into a new engine for the economy and rural development, helping to curb the exodus of the population and preserving natural resources and biodiversity.
Specifically, this pilot project, two new processes of FSC certification of Cork, in Extremadura and Catalonia, which affected nearly 13,000 hectares are brewing. Spain, the world's second producer of Cork, now has 30.469 ha of FSC certified Cork of a total of half a million hectares.
Also in the field of agriculture, the promoters of the project have been ongoing practices in more than 20 farms to recover the vegetation of the boundaries, preserve the soil from erosion and promote the control of pests with natural, such as birds and bats predators. At the same time, more than 150 farmers have participated in training activities on ecological viticulture.
