October 29, 2010
The Minister of environment and Rural Environment and marine (MARM), Rosa Aguilar, has been in favour of the agreement on agriculture between the EU-Morocco, pending ratification by the European Parliament, at the end of the first agriculture and Fisheries Council of the EU which intervenes. In addition, the owner of the MARM has taken the opportunity to accuse the people's Party criticizing the Convention to produce uncertainty, generate political confrontation and get electoral profitability. With these statements, Aguilar faced criticism from the President of the PP in Andalusia, Javier Arenas, in Brussels on 25 October. On that occasion, the leader of the Andalusian PP stated that both the central Government and the Junta de Andalucía the neglect of the interests not only of the autonomous community, but the rest of the country to the European Union, in particular by the agreement of partnership with the Moroccan Kingdom, and its potential impact on the sector of the tomato. In fact, the agreement between the two countries involves an extension of the schedule and the quotas for entry of production of Moroccan tomatoes on the Community market, a fact that has angered the Spanish producers, mainly from Andalusia and Murcia.
However, the past day 26, the Minister said that "this is a renewed agreement on the same basis and fundamentals" than the last between the two parties. A Convention in force when the leader of the Andalusian PP was Vice-President of the Executive of José María Aznar. At the time, the own Arenas stated that it was a good agreement, which did not affect the national sectors of tomatoes and vegetables. Thus, Aguilar has wanted to reassure farmers, ruling out reasons for uncertainty to this agreement. Described as "irresponsible" criticism from the opposition, Aguilar has opted for let Brussels who take a decision on such a Pact.
