COAG denounces the abuse of the dairy industry and distribution, as well as the passivity of the Marm, with new demonstrations
April 16, 2010
The Coordinator of organizations of farmers and cattlemen (Coag) will mobilize along with two other professional organizations agricultural and cooperative as protest against the abuses of power by large distribution chains and dairy industries, as well as to passivity exercised by the Ministry of environment Half Rural and Marine Affairs (Marm). The already chronic lack of profitability of farms due to the policy of prices below production costs, is unsustainable situation of 23,000 dairy farmers who still develop this activity in the country. The announcement by the industrial sector of further falls in the price of milk, is added to all this, so the liter in the field would be below 0.28 euros. However, as it recognizes the Marm, production costs reach the 0.35 euros per liter. For its part, large commercial distribution chains are still funding his "price war" at the expense of producers, using milk as a product claim or "hook", sometimes by selling losses, to attract consumers to their establishment.
In this context, Coag requires the Marm strong measures against the abuses of power by the dairies and the business practices of the distribution that go against the rules of the market. "It is vital for the future of the sector that our farms enter once and for all levels of profitability." It is impractical to continue milking losses every day. "Sololo in the last 12 months, more than 1,000 farmers have had to take the closure", has denounced Charo Arredondo, responsible for production livestock of Coag. "The producers is clear;" solutions through instruments that will ensure prices above costs on our farms. For this it is necessary to go for public control of milk production in the face of the reform of the common agricultural policy (Cap) in 2013 ", he has tempered.
