Higher productivity and quality in 'calçots' planted in August
July 23, 2009
The improvement of crops of "calçots", (a traditional variety of onion), has been the target of a project carried out by Irta and commissioned by the Comarcal Council of Alt Camp (Tarragona). Thus, it has been found that the production of 'calçots' planted in late August increases by more than 10% and at the same time, improving their quality (length), to the detriment of those that are planted a month later, since commercial production falls more than 50%. In the latter case, the application of a small dose of fertilizer has managed to increase productivity. Despite these results, and with the intention of avoiding plant health problems, experts do not recommend more advance the date of planting, especially in warm areas (coastal).
